Leverkusen were impressive on Tuesday against Atletico in UEFA Champions League, but it took two late goals from Robert Andrich and Diaby to see off the Spaniards at the BayArena. Disappointingly for Die Werkself, it was just their second victory in nine attempt this season. The other was a 3-0 win at Mainz on Matchday 4, while their only other positive result was last weekend's 2-2 draw at Hertha Berlin. It leaves Gerardo Seoane's side second from bottom in the Bundesliga, but the win in midweek will have given the team confidence. Hudson-Odoi has slotted straight in since his loan move from Chelsea, flitting across the front line with Diaby and behind striker Patrik Schick, who - together with Kerem Demirbay - has scored in each of the last two league outings. Jeremie Frimpong will be restored to the side after his assist off the bench against Atletico. The question is whether it's a back three or four for Bayer, with the improving Adam Hlozek's place most at risk.
Joint-third for goals scored this season, Werder had netted at least twice in every game until last week's 1-0 loss at home to Augsburg - only the promoted side's second defeat of the campaign. It was a setback that could've been avoided, if not for Marvin Ducksch's missed added-time penalty. A goal that would've continued a trend of late strikes by Die Grünweißen this campaign. Oliver Burke has been key to some of those late heroics, with two goals and an assist in just 77 minutes of playing time as a sub. Despite his impact, the Scotland international is yet to break up the front duo of Ducksch and Niclas Füllkrug. Goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka went off early last weekend and was replaced by Michael Zetterer, but the No.1 is set to be fit to start again. Leonardo Bittencourt, however, will miss out again with a rib issue.
Match stats
Second only to Robert Lewandowski last season with 24 goals, it took Schick until Matchday 5 to get his first goal of this term. He now has two in the last two.
Leverkusen are experiencing their worst start to a season since 1982/83, when they had three points at this juncture.
Die Werkself have lost their first three home games of a Bundesliga season for the first time.
Füllkrug is level with Sheraldo Becker at the top of the scoring chart with five goals each. He's never got more than six in the Bundesliga for Bremen.
Mitchell Weiser scored three goals in 53 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen between 2018 and 2021. He has had a hand in eight goals in 31 competitive games for Werder, including three assists in his six top-flight matches so far this term.
Werder are unbeaten on the road this season (W2, D2), and on their last three trips to Leverkusen (W1, D2).
