Wednesday's clash between Barnsley and Cardiff saw a melee erupt after the full-time whistle.

The Championship meeting at Oakwell, which Cardiff won 1-0, saw a feisty end to proceedings on the touchline.

It was a heated contest on the pitch, with six bookings dished out in total. And following the whistle, there was a coming-together between both sets of coaching staff and benches.

Video footage shows Tykes assistant coach Joseph Laumann having to be led away after an altercation with Cardiff assistant boss Mark Hudson.

Bluebirds' manager Steve Morison then goes over to celebrate with Cardiff's travelling fans, who are situated in the corner of a stand directly next to the tunnel area.

Footage then shows Laumann attempt to usher Morison down the tunnel. But the Barnsley man took umbrage and appears to shove him out of the way.

Stewards and security then quickly intervened to deal with the situation.

Morison said the animated celebrations and subsequent tunnel spat stemmed from Mads Andersen's poor challenge on Alfie Doughty.

Morison said: "The [Barnsley] assistant manager didn't like the fact that they lost and didn't handle it very well. It was fine, he just picked the wrong person.

"It was an awful tackle (by Barnsley's Mads Andersen on Cardiff's Alfie Doughty). That was why there was so much passion at the end because that was a real naughty tackle.

"They were hiding towels for long throws and being really nasty, and you know what happens when people are like that? They get their comeuppance and it's karma."

Uche Ikpeazu, on his Cardiff debut, scored the only goal of the game after 71 minutes to seal a precious win for the Welsh side.

It moves them nine points clear of third-bottom Peterborough.

As for Barnsley, they remain bottom and eight points shy of safety. This represented a fifth straight defeat for the Reds and boss Poya Asbaghi has taken just three points from 10 league games in charge.

He said: "This type of loss is brutal - there have been too many of these games during this season, where we feel that it is an even game, or maybe we even have a little bit of an advantage but still the opponents end up winning.

"Today I think we totally controlled the game in the way we wanted.

"For their goal, it's a two-vs-one situation that we should control but they still ended up scoring which was decisive. It was a tough, tough goal to concede at that moment.

"We have to keep performing - in the end these games will turn around into victories. There are still enough games for us to turn things around."

Regarding the melee, this is the second time this season that Barnsley have been involved in such an incident.

Back in September the Yorkshire side and Stoke City were fined £8,000 and £10,000 respectively after three coaches were sent off following unsavoury scenes.

Laumann was given a two-game ban for his part in that incident, as well as a £2,500 fine.
