The Ajax goalkeeper was said to be on his way from the capital city Yaounde to his country's training camp in Douala when the incident happened.
Thankfully, the 25-year-old is said to have emerged from the accident unscathed and will be available for Cameroon's crunch double-header against Algeria in this week's World Cup qualifiers.
While clearly the wellbeing of the goalkeeper is of paramount importance, it's set to be a big few months for Onana.
The Ajax man will be on the move this summer after reportedly agreeing a pre-contract deal with Italian giants Inter Milan.
This move will bring an end to a seven-year stay in the Netherlands after Onana made the move from Barcelona where he was part of the Samuel Eto'o foundation.
He then moved to Jong Ajax in 2015 before stepping up to the senior ranks in 2016 where he has since made over 200 appearances for the club.
While his move to Inter hasn't yet been formally announced, the goalkeeper did reveal his intention to move on when speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS, saying: "I have done my best for this club, so I think it was important for me to look for a new challenge.
"I think it's my right to sign the contract or not to sign the contract.
"At the end of the day, life is about making choices.
"I think I did a great job for this club for so many years already and I think that my time is over in Ajax."
