Saturday's League One predictions including Bolton Wanderers vs. Portsmouth

sportsmole.co.uk, 13 April 2024, 05:45
Barnsley vs. Reading (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Barnsley will attempt to bounce back from consecutive defeats when they welcome Reading to Oakwell for Saturday's encounter.

The Tykes occupy fifth place in the League One standings, while the visitors head into the weekend in 17th position.

We say: Barnsley 1-1 Reading

Barnsley will be keen to return to winning ways following back-to-back defeats, but we think that they will be held to a draw by a Reading side that has lost just one of their last five matches.

Bolton vs. Portsmouth (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Portsmouth will attempt to secure promotion to the Championship when they face Bolton Wanderers in Saturday's clash at Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Trotters will be hoping to claim all three points to boost their own chances of winning promotion from League One.

We say: Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Portsmouth

Pompey may won four of their previous five matches, but we think they will have to settle for a draw, with Bolton currently enjoying a nine-game unbeaten home league run.

Cambridge vs. Charlton (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Cambridge United can put some more distance between themselves and the League One relegation zone with a victory on Saturday versus Charlton Athletic at Abbey Stadium.

Following a 1-0 defeat to Blackpool last weekend, Cambridge are just five points clear of the relegation zone in 19th, while the Addicks are five places above them, having claimed a 2-2 draw with Wigan Athletic in their previous encounter.

We say: Cambridge United 1-2 Charlton Athletic

Traditionally, when these teams face each other, it is a very close game, and we expect that will be the case once again this weekend.

In the end, we believe the presence of the top goalscorer in League One, Alfie May, will tip the scales in favour of Charlton, as Cambridge do not possess a striker with his quality or consistency.

Carlisle vs. Blackpool (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Playoff-chasing Blackpool will attempt to claim a third consecutive victory when they face Carlisle United at Brunton Park on Saturday.

The Tangerines occupy eighth position in the Legaue One table, while basement side Carlisle have already had their relegation confirmed.

We say: Carlisle United 0-2 Blackpool

Blackpool may have lost their last two away matches, but we think the Tangerines will have the quality required to claim a relatively comfortable victory over League One's basement side.

Cheltenham vs. Bristol Rovers (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Seeking to climb out of the League One relegation zone, Cheltenham Town play host to Bristol Rovers at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Neither side could be separated the last time they locked horns in December when they played out a 1-1 draw at the Memorial Stadium.

We say: Cheltenham Town 1-0 Bristol Rovers

A closely-contested match between two out-of-form teams is in store this weekend, but taking into account the visitors' struggles in front of goal and the hosts' necessity to collect all three points in their quest to avoid the drop, we believe Cheltenham will find a way to come out on top.

Derby vs. Leyton Orient (Saturday, 3.00pm)

After drawing consecutive games, promotion-chasing Derby County will look to return to winning ways when they play host to Leyton Orient on Saturday.

The Rams currently occupy second place in the League One table, while the visitors head into the weekend in 10th position.

We say: Derby County 2-0 Leyton Orient

While Leyton Orient have little to play for, Derby will be highly motivated to clinch all three points to aid their promotion bid, and we think they will do enough to continue their impressive home form.

Fleetwood vs. Northampton (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to keep alive any faint hopes of escaping the bottom four in the League One table, Fleetwood Town will welcome Northampton Town to Highbury on Saturday.

With just four games left to play in England's third tier, the hosts find themselves six points adrift of safety, while their visitors sit 11th thanks to back-to-back wins.

We say: Fleetwood Town 0-2 Northampton Town

While the hosts certainly have far more to play for in Saturday's contest, it is the Cobblers who are enjoying an impressive end to the campaign while Fleetwood are failing to build any momentum in their unlikely survival bid.

Despite home advantage and the need for three points, we envisage Charlie Adam's side succumbing to another defeat at Highbury at the weekend.

Lincoln vs. Wigan (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Looking to continue their sensational form as they strive for a top-six finish, Lincoln City will welcome Wigan Athletic to LNER Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a League One clash.

The Imps' marvellous unbeaten run was extended by a point at Reading last weekend, whilst the Latics were forced to share the spoils with Charlton Athletic last time out.

We say: Lincoln City 1-0 Wigan Athletic

Considering Lincoln's recent home form, Skubala will be supremely confident in his side's ability to bounce back following the draw at Reading last time out.

Wigan's third-tier safety is already confirmed and that could have a negative impact on their performances levels at LNER Stadium, leading us to predict a defeat for Maloney's men.

Oxford Utd vs. Peterborough (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to maintain their standing in the top six of the league table, Oxford United will welcome Peterborough United to the Kassam Stadium on Saturday afternoon in League One.

The U's are coming into this weekend's clash following back-to-back victories, whilst Posh are still basking in the glory of their EFL Trophy triumph over Wycombe Wanderers.

We say: Oxford United 1-1 Peterborough United

With both sides heading into this clash following handsome victories, we are expecting a hard-fought battle between Oxford and Peterborough as they attempt to keep their promotion aims on track.

Posh were able to cruise to the win over Port Vale during the week, meaning that Ferguson's troops should have enough left in the tank to collect a point at the Kassam on Saturday.

Port Vale vs. Exeter (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Exeter City will attempt to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches when they travel to Vale Park for Saturday's clash with Port Vale.

Meanwhile, the relegation-threatened hosts will be desperate to end their three-game winless run as they look to retain their League One status.

We say: Port Vale 1-1 Exeter City

Port Vale will be targeting three points to boost their survival chances, but we think the Valiants will have to settle for a draw, with Exeter currently enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run.

Shrewsbury vs. Wycombe (Saturday, 3.00pm)

If they can come away with at least a single point on Saturday, Wycombe Wanderers would guarantee they remain in League One beyond this season as they travel to New Meadow this weekend for a date with Shrewsbury Town.

The Shrews were beaten 3-1 by Portsmouth last Saturday, putting them six points above the relegation line in 18th and six points below Wycombe, who played to a 0-0 draw with Derby County on Wednesday.

We say: Shrewsbury Town 2-0 Wycombe Wanderers

The Shrews have been far more consistent at home, and we believe they will be able to take advantage of a Wycombe side who are likely to be more fatigued, having already played this week and perhaps still mentally drained from losing the EFL Trophy in such dramatic fashion.

Stevenage vs. Burton Albion (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Aiming to keep their faint dreams of reaching the playoffs alive, Stevenage will welcome relegation-threatened Burton Albion to The Lamex Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a League One encounter.

The Boro secured a desperately-needed win against promotion-chasing Barnsley last time out, whereas the Brewers' woeful home form continued with a loss to Oxford United last weekend.

We say: Stevenage 1-0 Burton Albion

Stevenage's necessity to earn three points on Saturday is extremely high, and the Boro should be confident of picking up a maximum versus an out-of-form Burton side.

The Brewers will be happy to play away from the Pirelli Stadium on the weekend, however we are not expecting a change in fortunes for the visitors in terms of the result.
