Liverpool transfer roundup: Calvin Ramsay move agreed, midfielder search on hold

sportsmole.co.uk, 17 June 2022, 07:29
Liverpool have already captured what may prove to be one of the signings of the season, as Darwin Nunez has joined Fabio Carvalho in penning a long-term deal with Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Anfield faithful will still be expecting more from their side in the coming weeks, but they may be left disappointed as Liverpool prepare to finish their business with just one more acquisition.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up the latest Liverpool transfer news, including updates on Calvin Ramsay, Gavi and the Reds' midfielder search.

Calvin Ramsay on brink of Liverpool move

Eighteen-year-old Calvin Ramsay enjoyed a breakthrough season with Aberdeen last term, which saw him provide nine assists in all tournaments and be crowned the Scottish Football Writers' Association's Young Player of the Year.

Interest in the right-back was always inevitable given his performances, and Liverpool are seemingly set to win the race for the Scotland Under-21 international.

According to The Mirror, Liverpool and Aberdeen have agreed a deal for Ramsay, which will see the Reds pay £4m upfront and another potential £1.5m in add-ons.

Ramsay is supposedly set to agree personal terms and undergo his medical over the weekend, and official confirmation of his signing is therefore expected in the coming days.

The teenager would act as backup to Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield, which could pave the way for Neco Williams to join Fulham on a permanent deal.

Reds forced to give up Gavi pursuit?

In keeping with the theme of Liverpool signing the stars of tomorrow, the Reds were understood to be keeping a close eye on Gavi's uncertain situation at Barcelona.

The 17-year-old has so far held off on signing new terms with the Blaugrana, and a £42m release clause is thought to exist in his current deal, which only has 12 months left to run.

However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano now claims that Gavi is poised to extend his stay at Camp Nou after the club held positive talks with agent Ivan de la Pena.

Romano adds that Gavi's new deal will include a €1bn (£856.1m) release clause, and Barcelona ultimately agreed to a higher salary for the Spain international.

President Joan Laporta has also announced that a renewal is on the way, telling the press: "Gavi's new contract is on the verge of being completed - we are at final stages."

Gavi scored two goals and set up six more in 47 outings for Barcelona last season and also became Spain's youngest-ever goalscorer earlier this month.

Midfielder search on hold

Liverpool have already secured the signature of Carvalho to add to their midfield ranks, but Anfield fans may be forced to wait another 12 months before another marquee signing comes through the doors.

Borussia Dortmund have shut the door on an exit for Jude Bellingham after letting Erling Braut Haaland leave, while Aurelien Tchouameni snubbed interest from the Reds to sign for Real Madrid.

As a result, The Mirror, claims that Liverpool will instead wait until 2023 before splashing the cash on a new midfielder, as Klopp is determined to avoid signing a 'stop-gap'.

Liverpool can be expected to reignite their interest in Bellingham next term, but as of now, Klopp is said to be happy with the midfield options at his disposal.

Fabinho, Thiago Alcantara, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and James Milner - who recently signed a contract extension until 2023 - are all set to jostle for places next term.

However, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will likely be allowed to head elsewhere this summer, with the ex-Arsenal man set to enter the final 12 months of his deal.
