Tottenham blow two-goal lead as last-gasp James Ward-Prowse penalty dents top-four hopes at Southampton

Spurs thought they had leapfrogged Manchester United in the Premier League but a late penalty from James Ward-Prowse denied them.

Pape Matar Sarr was controversially adjudged to have fouled Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the box right at the end of the match.

And in the 93rd minute, Ward-Prowse made no mistake to call time on a six-goal thriller that saw the points shared.

After a bleak first-half, it did not look like there would be one goal - let alone six - but the game exploded into life right at the end of the first 45 minutes.

Pedro Porro scored his first goal for his new club since joining from Sporting after hammering the ball past Gavin Bazunu in injury-time.

But just seconds after the break, Che Adams struck after some fine work from former Arsenal star Theo Walcott.

Goals from Harry Kane and Ivan Perisic, also his first got the club, made it 3-1 before the ex-Gunner got on the scoresheet again with just over 10 minutes to go.

Walcott's strike in the 77th minute looked like that would be that but controversy struck when VAR intervened to hand Southampton a penalty right at the death.

Fraser Forster in goal for Spurs, who has made a name for himself as a penalty-saver as well as knowing the Saints captain well, truly had no chance as the England international dispatched an unstoppable spot-kick.

It sees Tottenham remain fourth in the Premier League table but United have two games in hand over them and could stretch their lead over them now in third.

And with Newcastle winning on Friday night, Spurs' top-four chances have taken a hit.

The Magpies also have two games in hand over Antonio Conte's men and sit two points behind them, putting their Champions League spot in a perilous position.

Pressure has ramped up on Conte from the fans at Tottenham after a miserable few weeks that saw him knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup.

It means that there is no hope of winning a trophy yet again this season while the Italian's contract will expire at the end of the season.

It is not looking likely that the former Chelsea coach will hang around past the season with neither club or manager making huge pushes to pen a new deal.
