Serge Gnabry explains Arsenal and Chelsea snubs after signing new contract

Serge Gnabry wants to win the Champions League in front of Bayern Munich supporters after signing a new long-term deal at the club.

The Germany international, 27, was linked with Premier League sides Chelsea and Arsenal but nothing came of the speculation. Gnabry is one of Bayern's best players after scoring 63 goals during his first four seasons in Bavaria, winning four consecutive Bundesliga titles.

He's already won the Champions League - starting Bayern's 1-0 victory against Paris Saint-Germain two years ago - but that game was played behind-closed-doors due to the Covid pandemic. As such, Gnabry wants to lift the trophy again in front of the club's fans.

"I thought a lot about what I wanted as a player for the next few years - and came to the conclusion: I want to stay at Bayern, win everything here again and experience something - above all the Champions League again," the winger told Bayern's website.

"Celebrating titles, but this time with our fans. It's something special because I can play here with my friends at the highest level. I certainly wouldn't experience that at any other club. I want to experience great moments here again - and not somewhere else. The hunger for big titles doesn't go away."

Gnabry has experienced an interesting career so far. He came through the ranks at Arsenal - playing 18 senior games - but never got the chance under Arsene Wenger. He was flogged to Werder Bremen for just £5million in the summer of 2016.

Gnabry's final season at the club was his lowest ebb in England. He spent it on loan at West Brom but made just three outings - with only one of those coming in the Premier League - after manager Tony Pulis insisted he wasn't "at that level" to play for West Brom.

"Serge has come here to play games but he just hasn't been for me, at the moment, at that level to play the games," said Pulis. "He's come from academy football and not played much league football - does academy football really prepare players for league football?

"And we're talking about Premier League football here. As a manager you pick a team that's going to win a game of football. You pick your best team - you don't leave people out because you don't like them, because of this, that and the other."

Those comments backfired when Gnabry became one of the stars of the Bundesliga, scoring 21 goals over the next two years for Bremen and Hoffenheim. He's cashed in on silverware since becoming part of Bayern's first team in July 2018, winning 11 in total.

"We are happy that Serge Gnabry has extended his contract at FC Bayern until 2026," added Bayern's sporting director, Hassan Salihamidzic. "Serge has become a face of FC Bayern, he is a German international, a goal threat - and he still has potential that he will exploit.

"Serge, as the good and trusting discussions with him and his advisors have also shown, identifies with our path and with FC Bayern. He is at the core of our team, he has brought a lot to the club so far and he will continue to be an important player for us."
