Saturday's Championship predictions including Leicester City vs. Cardiff City

sportsmole.co.uk, 19 August 2023, 05:05
Plymouth vs. Southampton (Saturday, 12.30pm)

Plymouth Argyle and Southampton will each be looking to extend their unbeaten runs in the Championship to three games when they meet at Home Park on Saturday afternoon.

Last season's League One champions and relegated Premier League outfit have accumulated four points from their opening two fixtures in the new second tier.

We say: Plymouth Argyle 2-2 Southampton

This has all the makings of a thrilling contest, with Plymouth playing with the confidence that comes with having made a fast start and Southampton seeing goals scored at both ends of the pitch. It leaves us to predict a high-scoring draw, one which will suit the home side more so than the visitors.

Blackburn vs. Hull City (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Both on the back of relatively positive starts to the Championship season, Blackburn Rovers and Hull City will meet at Ewood Park on Saturday in the third round of league fixtures.

The hosts played out a 2-2 draw with Rotherham United last weekend after an opening-day victory, while the visitors put their first points on the board in a 4-2 beating of Sheffield Wednesday.

We say: Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Hull City

Blackburn Rovers have started the season on the front foot, and while Hull City will travel with confidence following their dominant display last weekend, we do not anticipate them doing enough to take a share of the spoils at Ewood Park.

Bristol City vs. Birmingham (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Both Bristol City and Birmingham City will be hoping to preserve their unbeaten statuses in the Championship when they clash at Ashton Gate on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts were late winners at The Den against Millwall last weekend, while Birmingham enjoyed a special day at St Andrew's in the presence of their new ownership group.

We say: Bristol City 1-1 Birmingham City

Bristol City will be full of confidence after their last-minute win at Millwall, but the Robins' inconsistent tendencies could hinder their chances of securing maximum points this time out.

Birmingham are also coming into this clash off the back of an outstanding result, and we believe Blues will have enough to maintain their unbeaten record in the Championship for another week.

Leicester vs. Cardiff (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Leicester City will be hoping to maintain their perfect start to the season when they play host to Cardiff City in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

At a time when the Foxes sit in second position in the standings, the Bluebirds are in 17th spot after failing to win either of their opening two fixtures.

We say: Leicester City 2-0 Cardiff City

Cardiff will feel that they can play with a certain level of freedom against opponents who have been tipped to win the league. Nevertheless, that is unlikely to change the end result, the Foxes likely to come through this match in comfortable fashion.

Middlesbrough vs. Huddersfield (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Two of the four sides who are yet to score a point in the Championship so far this season will do battle on Saturday, as Middlesbrough welcome Huddersfield Town to the Riverside Stadium.

After experiencing vastly different fortunes last time around, the two teams have both lost their opening two league games and will fight to get up and running this weekend, having already met in the EFL Cup this month.

We say: Middlesbrough 2-0 Huddersfield Town

Although they have failed to impress so far this season, Middlesbrough do still have the quality to get past Warnock's resilient Terriers, and they should expect to come away with all three points on home turf.

QPR vs. Ipswich (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Ipswich Town travel to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon looking to retain top spot in the Championship standings.

While the Tractor Boys occupy first position on goal difference, QPR are down in 16th place, which will be deemed acceptable given their start to the campaign.

We say: Queens Park Rangers 1-3 Ipswich Town

QPR shown at the end of last season that they were capable of upsetting teams that sit at the top of the table. Nevertheless, it feels like a different story this time around, and we expect Ipswich to continue on their merry way during the early stages of 2023-24.

Sheff Weds vs. Preston (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Sheffield Wednesday will look to put their first points of the Championship season on the board on Saturday, when they welcome Preston North End to Hillsborough.

The Owls suffered a defeat away at Hull City last weekend, while their visitors picked up their first league victory of the campaign at the second time of asking.

We say: Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Preston North End

Preston North End will travel to Hillsborough with confidence from their encouraging start to the term, while Sheffield Wednesday will certainly be keen to bounce back from their tough start under Xisco Munoz, and we see a share of the spoils as the most likely outcome on Saturday.

Stoke vs. Watford (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Stoke City play host to Watford on Saturday afternoon looking to bounce back from losing their undefeated start to the season last weekend.

Meanwhile, the Hornets, sitting in third position in the table, make the trip to the bet365 Stadium as the only team in the Championship yet to concede a goal.

We say: Stoke City 1-1 Watford

This could emerge as one of the best fixtures of the weekend with both teams having put together squads capable of challenging for promotion. We can only predict a draw between two well-match sides, Stoke potentially being content if they can avoid a second defeat in succession.

Sunderland vs. Rotherham (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Sunderland and Rotherham United will both fight for first wins of the Championship season on Saturday, when they meet at the Stadium of Light.

The hosts have lost both of their opening two games in England's second tier, while their visitors were held to a 2-2 draw last weekend for their first point of the campaign.

We say: Sunderland 2-0 Rotherham United

Although they are missing their star forward and have lost both league games thus far, Sunderland do still possess plenty of quality and it surely only a matter of time until they get up and running in the Championship.

We envisage them putting up a first victory of the campaign on Saturday, with the Millers not expected to cause them too many problems on the road.

Swansea vs. Coventry (Saturday, 3.00pm)

Swansea City will be looking to earn their first win of the new Championship campaign when they welcome Coventry City to the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts have endured a difficult opening to their second-tier season following a pair of matches against West Midlands opposition, while Coventry silenced their doubters with a resounding win over Middlesbrough last time out.

We say: Swansea City 1-2 Coventry City

Swansea are still searching for their first victory of the Championship campaign, and the visit of Coventry represents a very difficult challenge on Saturday afternoon.

The Sky Blues were at their efficient best in the win over Middlesbrough, and we are expecting them to cause the Swans a lot of problems in South Wales this weekend.
