Premier League are 'protecting themselves' by not letting Burnley sign Moses

The former Chelsea player currently plays for Spartak Moscow and wants to leave Russia amid the country's ongoing invasion of Ukraine..

The 31-year-old Nigerian is out of contract at the end of the season, but can be signed now if FIFA and UEFA authorise the move.

Other leagues around Europe, such as LaLiga, are able to offer sanctuary to players who have been affected by the events in Ukraine.

However, Burnley have seen an attempt to sign Moses blocked by the Premier League, despite all other parties being open to a deal.

Their decision to prevent players joining outside the transfer windows is to 'protect the integrity of the competition'.

Speaking on talkSPORT, ex-footballers Ambrose and Sanderson were sympathetic over the situation, and said the Premier League should have allowed Moses to join Burnley.

"I think they're protecting themselves [the Premier League]," former Charlton Athletic midfielder Ambrose told talkSPORT.

"Do I feel Victor Moses going to Burnley and being the saviour and being the difference in them staying up? I don't, I don't think he would.

"He could help them and if Burnley managed to get out of it [and] if Everton, Brentford, Leeds or whoever went down and I think the Premier League are just protecting themselves.

"They're not thinking of the player, but of the future problems that this could cause if Victor Moses is the difference."

Sanderson added: "I feel for him, I feel like it's difficult because the rules are being made up as they go along because no one foresaw this happening.

"It's difficult, but at the same time would other teams turn around and say, 'You signed Moses, you then stayed up'.

"I agree with you, I don't think Moses is going to be the answer to Burnley staying up, but I do think it's a bit strange they blocked him from doing that because where's he going to go?

"It wasn't long ago he was playing at Chelsea and he was a rejuvenated player in this full-back/wing-back position.

"He's still got a lot to offer and I feel for him because they brought in this rule but there wasn't even a rule before, now he tried to come and they've made it a rule."
