Mikel Arteta admits Gabriel Jesus is set to be out for 'weeks' ahead of Newcastle clash

The Brazilian starred in the Gunners' 2-1 win over Sevilla in the Champions League last month but picked up a muscle injury late in the game.

Jesus sustained a tweak in his hamstring in the 79th minute of the Group B clash at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.

He has not played or trained since, with concerns beginning to rise over whether he could be out long-term.

And Mikel Arteta has now reluctantly confirmed that his No.9 will not be returning until after the international break at least.

The next break spans from November 13 to November 21, meaning Jesus could be out for almost a month.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of the Gunners' trip to Newcastle, Arteta said: "I cannot guarantee that [he will be back following the break].

"I said it will be weeks but it's very difficult to put a timeframe on it."

This update came after the Spanish boss revealed he will need to be cautious when it comes to Jesus returning.

"With him, I'm honestly not going to give [a timeframe]. I did it once and got it totally wrong," Arteta admitted.

"We need to be cautious because we need to treat it in the right way.

"He's already pushing everybody and wants to be back as quickly as possible, and we need him, so that's great."

Jesus has impressed during his time at Arsenal but has struggled with a number of fitness problems in north London.

The 25-year-old missed a large chunk of last season after suffering a serious knee injury playing for Brazil at the 2022 World Cup.

A reoccurrence of the problem saw Jesus sidelined for the start of the 2023/24 campaign, with the striker only returning in September.

But now he looks set for yet another spell out with Eddie Nketiah stepping up to take his place in the side once again.

Jesus watched on as Nketiah scored a hat-trick last weekend and he'll be hoping his teammate can keep scoring in his absence.
