Man Utd's last 6 Champions League-winning transfers amid Casemiro move

Man United have sealed a move for Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro and the Brazilian becomes just the latest to arrive at Old Trafford after lifting Europe's main prize

Manchester United have agreed a deal for Real Madrid's Casemiro.

The Brazilian moves to Old Trafford for a fee of around £59million and becomes the Red Devils' fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

Casemiro's arrival gives the Red Devils much-needed midfield reinforcement - and Erik ten Hag will hope that he can use his trophy-laden experience at Real Madrid to help better his new employers. It hasn't always worked out that way though.

Numerous Champions League winners have arrived at Old Trafford throughout the years with mixed results. Here Mirror Football

takes a look at the most recent.

Raphael Varane

Heading into the 2021 summer transfer market, United were desperate to add another centre-back to their squad following the indifferent displays of both Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. Raphael Varane looked to be the perfect candidate having become a key player for both Real Madrid and the French national team.

The World Cup winner eventually arrived at Old Trafford for a £34m fee and despite having lifted four Champions League titles with Real, failed to hit the heights expected of him in Manchester.

The 29-year-old made just 26 starts in what was a disastrous campaign for the Red Devils as they slumped to a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League and were knocked out of the Champions League in the first knockout round. He remains at United and optimism that things would improve were slightly wide of the mark with the Red Devils enduring a woeful start to Erik ten Hag's tenure.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Supporters had clamoured for Red Devils hero Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford practically since he departed in 2009. They got their wish 12 months ago as, despite early links with rivals Manchester City, the Portuguese penned a two-year deal to return from Juventus.

Despite a relatively positive campaign from a personal viewpoint in which he scored 24 goals, the team suffered. Ronaldo has threatened to sour his legacy at Old Trafford by lodging a request to leave the club just a year after his emotional reunion with the Red Devils.

So far, a lack of suitors has stopped Ronaldo from leaving and it remains to be seen whether he remains as a Man United player beyond September's deadline.

Bastian Schweinsteiger

A legend at Bayern Munich, it was certainly a shock to see the German giants let Schweinsteiger go in a £6.5 million deal back in 2015. It would be fair to say that the midfielder was some way beyond his best when he arrived at Old Trafford under the tutelage of Louis van Gaal.

Schweinsteiger made just 18 Premier League appearances during his first season - his only goal coming against eventual champions Leicester City. His opportunities were even more limited following the arrival of Jose Mourinho, the then 32-year-old limited to just four outings and being forced to train with United's youth side.

A switch to MLS outfit Chicago Fire saw the 2013 Champions League winner draw a line under what was a disappointing spell in England.

Angel Di Maria

Whilst Schweinsteiger was coming to the twilight of his career when he became a Man Utd player, the same can certainly not be said of Angel di Maria. The Argentine was at the peak of his powers having played a key role in Real Madrid's Champions League success against near neighbours Atletico Madrid.

Di Maria became the most expensive signing in the history of English football with a £59.7m switch to Old Trafford and the early signs were positive - a glorious chip against Leicester City seemingly setting the tone.

He only spent a season at Old Trafford with United making a considerable loss on his signature following a move to PSG. The Argentine has only just departed the Parc des Princes this summer having sealed a move to Juventus at the end of his contract.

Victor Valdes

A Barcelona icon, Spanish international Valdes arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer midway through the 2014/15 season to provide more competition to the Red Devils' goalkeeping department.

He was rarely seen on the pitch for the Red Devils though having made just two appearances during his season-and-a-half during his spell at Old Trafford. A loan at Standard Liege was followed by a permanent move to Middlesbrough before Valdes elected to hang his gloves up.

Juan Mata

With the Red Devils enduring a hugely disappointing season under David Moyes, the Scot elected to dip into the transfer market to improve the club's fortunes. Having won both the Champions League and Europa League at Chelsea - as well as having twice claimed the player of the year award at Stamford Bridge - Spanish playmaker Mata was seen as the perfect candidate.

Despite not having been involved in one of the more successful periods in Man Utd history, he has been one of the more impressive signings of recent years. Mata made 285 appearances for the Red Devils before waving goodbye to the club at the end of his contract this summer.

At the age of 34, Mata has not yet found a club for the new season but has also not announced his retirement from the game so there is yet time for him to pen a deal with a new club.
