Liverpool to make millions on forgotten Rodgers signing who never played a game

Brendan Rodgers signed plenty of players during his Liverpool tenure with varying degrees of success.

The likes of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho were crucial to their Premier League title charge in 2014.

The latter of those earning the club over £100m in profit when he eventually left in 2018 to head to Barcelona.

But Rodgers also signed another Brazilian, although he would never make an appearance for the Reds.

Allan Rodrigues de Souza joined Liverpool from Internacional in the summer of 2015, signing for £500,000.

He impressed coaches at the Frenz International Cup and after training with Rodgers' squad at Melwood.

Immediately there were issues about getting him eligible for selection which led to a host of loan spells with the likes of SJK, Sint-Truiden, Hertha BSC, Apollon Limassol, Eintracht Frankfurt, Fluminense.

It was Fluminense's fellow Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro who eventually captured Allan's signature for £3.2m back in 2020 as issues continues around Allan's selection.

Liverpool earned £2.5m from a player who never played a single minute despite spending over four years at Anfield.

The Reds have earned praise for their shrewd activity in the transfer market and inserted a sell-on clause into Allan's contract.

The midfielder, who plays alongside Diego Costa, helped Atletico Mineiro defend their Campeonato Mineiro crown as well as lift only their second Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A title.

Clubs in Europe have often looked to utilise the Brazilian market which could yet see the Merseyside outfit profit.

Atletico Mineiro's record sale is Bernard, who moved to Shakhtar Donetsk for €25m in 2013.

"When I came here, one or two months later Allan was here and I said, 'who is this?'" Klopp said previously.

"'He is a player for us and the week before he became a champion in Finland. Interesting - why didn't he play here? Because it's not possible'. And then I started learning about the FA rules and things like this.

"I saw him in training and I thought 'oh my God, what can we do to keep this boy here and bring him into the line-up?' He's 19 years old, an outstanding talent, a good player with a good attitude, everybody loves him, he's a nice lad - so that's really, really good. He's a smart player.

Klopp also added: "We hope we can find a solution in the future because he will be a fixed part of the squad in the future, for sure. Now he uses this time to improve and the next step to the U20 national team of Brazil is a great story."

No solution would be found, but Liverpool stand to profit from his sale if Atletico Mineiro do cash in.
