Lionel Messi has another milestone surpassed on day he loses assists record

Lionel Messi has been moved off the podium of Barcelona's youngest ever scorer after Gavi opened his account during the win over Elche.

It's safe to assume that the Argentine's goalscoring exploits at the Camp Nou will never be matched, having scored a staggering 672 times during his 20-year career at the club.

Add 34 trophies to the mix and there's a very fair argument that Messi's career with the Blaugrana is the greatest of any player at a single club.

But after leaving the LaLiga giants for Paris Saint-Germain, the 34-year-old has started to see some of his more obscure records be broken.

On Saturday, Dusan Tadic broke what appeared to be another unreachable record, registering his 37th assist of the calendar yeat during Ajax's win defeat to AZ Alkmaar.

The former Southampton playmaker has played in integral role in Ajax's recent success, including their memorable run to the Champions League semi final in 2019.

And his latest assist saw him eclipse the record Messi set during his stunning 2011, which saw him score 73 times in 60 games and create another 36 for his team-mates.

Unsurprisingly, that saw him win the Ballon d'Or, one of a record-breaking seven he has earned during his illustrious career.

But with two further games in 2021, Tadic looks set to pull even further clear of Messi's creative record, on a day where another of his Barcelona milestones were passed.

During the 3-2 win over Elche, Gavi became the third youngest player to score for Barcelona, finding the net aged 17 years and 135 days.

That beat Messi, who opened his account at 17 years and 331 days, with Gavi now behind only Bojan (17 years and 53 days) and Ansu Fati (16 years and 304 days).

But it isn't just his age that has led to comparisons with Barcelona's greatest ever player and the goal had more than just a hint of Messi magic about it.

Picking the ball up with his back to goal around 40 yards out, Gavi effortlessly turned his midfield before faking three defenders on the edge of the box, allowing him to fire into the bottom corner.

Gavi then kissed the Barcelona badge after scoring a goal that could be looked upon for years to come.

The young midfielder is said to be closing in on a new deal and looks set to play a pivotal role in the rebuilding job Xavi is undertaking.

It was another night where the talented youngsters from La Masia helped Barcelona to victory, with 22-year-old Ferran Jutgla Blanch and Nico Gonzalez, 19, also finding the net.

Messi won't have lost too much sleep watching his beloved Barce however, he still holds records for most goals in La Liga (474), most in a La Liga and European league season (50), most hat-tricks in La Liga (36) and the UEFA Champions League (8), and most assists in La Liga (192).
