Joachim Andersen in angry altercation with Palace fans following Brighton defeat

The heat has been increasing around Hodgson's position with the clash against rivals Brighton seen as a huge contest in which to get their season back on track.

However after shipping in four goals at the Amex Stadium to Roberto De Zerbi's side, frustrations started to boil over at full-time.

As Palace's players made their way to the away end to thank them for their support, fans seemingly made their opinions felt leading to angry scenes.

In footage filmed by fan Ryan Aird, Palace defender Andersen appeared to confront one of the fans along with goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

Fans clearly had some choice words with them before stewards and Palace coach, Paddy McCarthy, dragged the centre-back away.

Speaking about the incident to talkSPORT after the game, Hodgson said: "I didn't see it, unfortunately.

"It's bad enough losing the game 4-1 and dealing with that - you don't need to compound the misery by confronting people who are obviously disappointed.

"They came here with high hopes and hoping for a win and not only did they not season Crystal Palace win, they saw Crystal Palace well beaten.

"These frustrations are understandable and I'm afraid that if you go over and engage with the fans then they're likely to make their feelings known."

He added: "For football clubs, fans need to be behind them, egging them on and giving them support and pushing them in the right direction.

"When that doesn't happen it can't be good, of course it can't be good, but it's up to us - the players and the staff - to make sure our performances on the field are better and that we start winning some games."
