Haaland is already under pressure - but he'll hit the ground running at Man City

mirror.co.uk, 16 July 2022, 21:30
Manchester City secured one of Europe's most in-demand players by signing Erling Haaland from Manchester City earlier this summer - and Champions League glory is on their mind

It's all change at Manchester City and the spotlight is on Erling Haaland as he prepares to explode into the Premier League.

I've heard it said he might need time to settle in and, of course, he will have to adapt to the way Pep Guardiola sets up City to play. Then there's the Premier League and the eyes of the world on him, watching to see how he copes with English football.

All that might be true. But make no mistake, I'm convinced Haaland will hit the ground running - he's a born goalscorer who has bagged goals for fun since he started at Bryne, his hometown club in Norway.

He continued that at Molde, then with Red Bull Salzburg and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga. People will say he's under pressure but from where I'm sitting it looks like he thrives on that.

And if you are playing for a big team you should have pressure to perform, especially at somewhere like City. Yet wherever he's been goals have flowed and that makes him a confident striker because scoring is second nature.

His stats back that up. They are off the scale for club and country and Guardiola knows if anyone can guarantee goals, it's Haaland. It all come so naturally. That's why City have pushed the boat out to sign him.

And, more importantly, it's why they have let Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus leave for what might be considered rival clubs. That's certainly the case for Sterling going to Chelsea.

The very fact they've let him go to Stamford Bridge after the contribution he's made to them winning three Premier League titles in the last four seasons tells you everything about where City are right now.

For me, and some people might not agree, Sterling is potentially coming to the peak of his career, yet City and Guardiola are happy to allow him to go to one of their direct rivals. How's that for confidence in the Manchester City squad?

It tells you everything about the situation they are in and that Pep is massively comfortable with the players he's got. And that's the problem the rest of the Premier League are going to face next season as they try to halt City's charge to another League crown.

Teams might work on a plan to stop Haaland and some days it might even work. But what about the nine other outfield players who have been brilliant like Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Jack Grealish who can all cause damage?

So it's not just about stopping Haaland, although I'll admit he does look like everything a fan would ever want in a number nine. His physique is perfect for the Premier League and while he can score all types of goals he can also hold the ball up which is a massive bonus.

The last thing you want as a midfielder or defender is to see the ball keep coming back when you've played it forward. It's been said he's the missing piece for Guardiola but City haven't struggled for goals the last few seasons.

How many goals will Erling Haaland score this season? Have your say in the comments!

They've usually hit 100 or more and racked up points in the 90s - and that's without a typical centre forward. On the domestic front, they've got it sown up and will be the team to beat again.

City won't admit it but I'm certain they've bought him for the Champions League, where they often struggle to finish teams off in the latter stages. When the margins are tight someone like Haaland can be the difference.

And I've few doubts that once he gets going he will unlock the door to the Champions League trophy for City and Guardiola.
