The Tyne-Wear derby took place for the first time in eight years as the bitter rivals were drawn together in the FA Cup third round.
While the atmosphere was red hot, the match itself remained mild-mannered for the most part.
An own goal from Dan Ballard gifted the Premier League favourites the lead in the first half.
And the Championship underdogs never fully recovered, conceding a second to Alexander Isak as a result of sloppy defending immediately after half-time.
The action heated up slightly towards the latter stages, seemingly as the Sunderland players began to realise the derby was getting away from them.
