Gakpo throws ball into Man Utd's court with transfer admission over "lessons"

Cody Gakpo admits he hasn't heard from Manchester United - but has hinted that he would consider a move to the Premier League giants.

The Dutch forward has excelled at PSV in recent years and has furthered his reputation with his performances at the World Cup. Gakpo has scored three times in Qatar which has caught the attention of several of Europe's heavyweights with United seeking more firepower.

Erik ten Hag has raided the Eredivisie for several new recruits and could again looking to bolster his ranks come the New Year. The abrupt departure of Cristiano Ronaldo has left a hole in the Manchester attack, which could force the club into the market next month.

The Dutchman has confessed that he's had no contact from the Red Devils as he opened up on the summer rumour mill. He told Dutch newspaper NRC : "That was a tough period. I learned from that. I'm going to do it differently. What comes, that comes. Suppose you want to go from RKC (Waalwijk) to PSV, but that club is not coming. Then you can panic.

"I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn't happen, I couldn't remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United did come. Should I go there? Now I wait everything. I haven't heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I'll think about it. I also seek the help of God in these decisions."

The forward, who has an extremely strong faith, also added: "As footballers, we are in the spotlight. People watch us. I feel it a duty to do something about it. I try to convey the lessons I learn from my church as best as possible to others who need it."

United have struggled for goals this term with their top goalscorer being Marcus Rashford - who has notched four times in the Premier League. Gakpo has already scored 13 times for PSV but will be in high demand after his exploits in Qatar, which is likely to hike his price.

Last month Ten Hag hinted at a lack of forward options available to him, with youngster Alejandro Garnacho among those to break into the first-team this term. The Dutchman claimed a top four finish will be challenging if United do not improve their options in the final third.

He said: "In the front line, the availability of the players that is a concern for us. We had to play some other games where we have to improvise to construct a proper offensive line. If you can't do that, then it's really difficult to get into the first four, if you don't have the players to construct a proper offensive line."
