The forward, who currently plays for Spartak Moscow, has previously been linked with a move to Liverpool, but is now accused of smuggling two batches of cocaine which weighed a combined 1370kg.
The drug was intercepted in Antwerp, Belgium three weeks ago, with the product having a staggering street value of £65million.
The 31-year-old has already been on trial for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing at a family gathering.
According to NOS, a pre-trial hearing in the Netherlands will go ahead on June 5.
However the Dutch international, who has 50 caps for his country, will not attend as he continues to turn out for Russian side Spartak Moscow, with Promes set to feature in their final game of the season this weekend.

Promes' lawyer Robert Malewicz declined to comment to Het Paroo, saying: "I will provide a further explanation during Monday's hearing."
Promes started his professional career with Dutch side Twente before joining Spartak Moscow in 2014.
After four successful years he joined Spanish side Sevilla before joining Dutch giants Ajax in 2019.
However he returned to Russia in 2021 where he has now become the club's highest-ever scorer in the Russian Premier League.
