England face moment of "destiny" as Lionesses backed to make history vs Germany

England legend Karen Carney believes it is "destiny" for the Lionesses to beat Germany at Wembley.

The Lionesses will face their bitter football rivals in Sunday's Euros final with the chance for England's women to lift their first ever major trophy. It is a rematch of the men's 1966 World Cup final and Carney is predicting it is written in the stars for Sarina Wiegman to lead England to victory in their home tournament.

Ex-England star Carney, who won 114 caps, said: "It's destined to be now. It's an incredible opportunity for us to win it and change destiny. I wanted us to play Germany because as a nation, both men's and women's, if we beat them then we can leave that whole history behind us and say: 'we've won a final and beat the Germany national team.'

"I got to the final in 2009, we've had three back-to-back semi finals but I actually think we weren't destined to win then. I think the time is now.

"We're on home soil, all eyes are on us, this team is not about individuals, we've got multiple players, a figurehead of a manager who is just amazing.

"We've got the crowd, people talking about it. This is the moment for this team, these players and it's gone so well so far. The next step is for us to win it."

Carney, a brand ambassador for Booking.com, was wearing an orange England shirt when she did the interview and believes that could even become as iconic as the red shirts England won in 1966. She added: "I've been thinking about the jersey. The men's jersey is so iconic from the 1966 World Cup final, could this jersey be the same for the women's team and it could be just the start."

"With Germany, I think they will be more organised. I've watched Germany a few times and they are well drilled, disciplined and look mentally really tough.

"They remind me of the Germany of old before they went through their transition period. They are adaptable, can change systems through the game. They can play high, they can press and are very strong.The game plans that Sarina Wiegman will look at will be a new challenge. But a very different challenge."
