Denmark players 'under investigation' over alleged pool romp with hotel staff

Denmark are facing an investigation after reportedly holding an all-too-friendly pool party before a crucial World Cup qualifying match.

Kasper Hjulmand's side reached Qatar with two games to spare this month, beating Moldova and Austria to continue their 100% record in Group F, in which they are yet to concede a goal.

And it was ahead of the Danes' trip to the Moldovan capital of Chisinau last Saturday that the team found themselves in hot water - in more than one respect.

The Danish FA have opened an investigation after players allegedly slept with female staff at a hotel in Elsinore last week, according to The Sun.

The Hotel Marienlyst has since reprimanded two waitresses after 'being too friendly' with some of the squad.

A number of Premier League stars were called up by Hjulmand, including Chelsea 's Andreas Christensen and Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Leicester pair Kasper Schmeichel and Jannik Vestergaard were also part of the group, along with Brentford duo Christian Norgaard and Mathias Jensen, though there is no suggestion any of those players were involved in the alleged sordid antics.

Hotel manager Michael Lauritsen vented his anger in a leaked email to staff which has reportedly been leaked, labelling the events in Denmark as "disappointing and totally unacceptable".

Lauritsen is alleged to have wrote: "Unfortunately, there are some employees who have been too friendly to the national team.

"I had not thought this could take place in my wildest imagination.

"I have to remind you that we always act professionally, and do not socialise with the players privately in guest areas or in the rooms."

He additionally told Danish magazine Se og Hor : "I can confirm that I have had to reprimand two staff members who did not comply with our personnel policy.

"I always have ongoing contact with the Danish FA, and of course we have discussed this.

"I have been told that the women were in one pool while the players were in another, and the two groups gathered in one.

"This is not going to work."

Having reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020 amid the trauma of Christian Eriksen's on-pitch cardiac arrest during their opening game of the tournament, the defensively stubborn Denmark can now plan for the World Cup next winter.

"You can only dream about things like this," said Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg post-qualification in Copenhagen, where team-mate Eriksen collapsed four months ago, on Tuesday.

"It's crazy. This is huge for me, it's huge for the team, for Danish football and for Denmark.

"With the age and quality we have, we will only keep growing. It's about staying humble and keeping our minds in the right place."

Wing-back Joakim Maehle's second-half strike against Austria made it 27 goals without reply for the Danes in qualification, giving themselves an unassailable lead of seven points over second-placed Scotland.

"It means a lot," Atalanta defender Maehle said on Danish television. "It's one of the best nights in [the] Parken [Stadium] in a very long time.

"It's amazing."
