Arteta monitors three new signings as Arsenal begin pre-season training abroad

Three of Arsenal's four summer signings were all in attendance for the Gunners' first training session of their pre-season camp in Germany.

Mikel Arteta has been busy in the transfer market so far this summer having strengthened his Arsenal squad in a number of key areas well in advance of the start of next season. Brazilian wonderkid Marquinhos was the first to come through the door having been pried away from Sao Paulo last month.

His signing was swiftly followed by a surprise move for Porto playmaker Fabio Vieira, which took plenty of pundits and punters by surprise due to the lack of speculation prior to the switch. American international goalkeeper Matt Turner became the third arrival after bidding farewell to the New England Revolution.

The most high-profile arrival so far is undeniably ex-Manchester City man Gabriel Jesus, who cost the Gunners £45million. Of that quartet, only Vieira was not spotted during the pre-season training came in Germany.

That could be due to the fact that the young Portuguese star was recently spotted with his foot in a protective boot, with Vieira clearly nursing some kind of knock incredibly early into his Arsenal career. The Gunners fans had their fears eased by the player himself, who took to Instagram to insist the boot was purely precautionary and he should be back training again shortly.

All eyes were firmly on Jesus as he made the trip to Germany just a day after his switch to the Emirates was officially confirmed. The Brazilian international was all smiles as he linked up with his new teammates and looked at home among other Arsenal stars already.

Jesus arrives with huge expectations placed on his shoulders due to the money Arsenal paid for him but also the role in which he will occupy. Make no mistake, Arteta has hedged his bets on the ex-Palmeiras man to be the forward to lead Arsenal back into the Champions League next term.

The other new boys currently training in Germany are not expected to play quite as much as the Brazilian. Turner has been brought in to push Ramsdale and provide adequate competition to Arsenal's number one.

Technical director Edu revealed that Turner had actually been on the Gunners transfer wish-list for quite some time prior to the announcement of his move. "We are delighted that Matt is joining us. Matt is a goalkeeper with established qualities and experience, who will be a great addition to our squad," he explained.

"We identified Matt some time ago and worked hard to ensure that his transfer was complete so he could join us in time for our pre-season in July. We now look forward to Matt joining us, settling into his new home and working ahead of next season."

Marquinhos is the youngest of the new boys at just 19 years of age but could view the early stages of Arsenal's Europa League campaign as a real chance to stake his claim for a role within the first-team set-up.

There has been little talk of the Brazilian leaving the club on loan to try and gain further experience, which could suggest Arteta views Marquinhos as someone who will play his part next term.
