Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren leave as Premier League winners but Liverpool made some terrible signings in 2014 transfer window, including Mario Balotelli

talksport.com, 30 July 2020, 10:09
Although they lost their best player in Luis Suarez, pocketing £75million was a great chance for Liverpool to improve their squad in 2014.

Suffice to say the club took action, making NINE signings in the window they let Suarez, who was beginning a four-month ban from all football for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup, join Barcelona.

Two of those acquisitions have left in recent days - Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren.

Both have played their part in helping Liverpool become one of the best sides in the world, but how did the other players who walked through the door at Anfield in the summer of 2014 perform?

Divock Origi is now the only player signed during that period who's still on the books at Merseyside, which gives you an idea of how most of them turned out.

talkSPORT.com has ranked the nine signings made from worst to best. Any Liverpool fan reading this better get ready for some uncomfortable reading.

9) Mario Balotelli

Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool's manager at the time, jokingly admitted the Italy striker would bring 'trouble' to the side. The joke was soon very much on the then-rudderless Reds.

Balotelli's attitude and application has always been a problem so it's no surprise he didn't fit into Liverpool's style of play which depended on everyone running their heart out.

He scored just one Premier League goal for Liverpool and was sold two years later having spent the 2015/16 campaign on loan at AC Milan.

It was never a good match between Balotelli and Liverpool but while the Reds find themselves as Premier League champions, the 29-year-old has been linked with Como, who play in the third tier of Italian football.

8) Lazar Markovic

The Serbian was looking like one of the better signings made that summer, although he only got three goals and one assist in all competitions in 2014/15.

He never made a competitive appearance for Liverpool again but amazingly he still stayed on the club's books until January 2019.

Liverpool tried and tried to shift him, sending him on loan FOUR times, but no one would take Markovic on a permanent deal. This is why he ranks so lowly in these charts.

7) Alberto Moreno

And on the subject of players who stayed for far too long, Moreno being at Liverpool for five seasons really takes the biscuit.

At least Markovic was out of the way on his various loan spells but the Spaniard was stunting Liverpool's success with his erratic performances, especially in the 2016 Europa League final where he was at fault for two goals the Reds conceded in their defeat to Sevilla.

It wasn't until Andy Robertson settled in during the 2017/18 season when Moreno was finally dropped as their first choice left-back.

He left the club last summer shortly after Liverpool won the Champions League. He has a winners' medal to boast while players like Sergio Aguero, Robert Lewandowski, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Gianluigi Buffon haven't. Let that sink in.

6) Javier Manquillo

You may have forgotten he played for Liverpool, which kind of says it all.

He arrived at Anfield on a two-year loan deal with plenty of pedigree but it's clear to see why Atletico Madrid were happy to let the full-back go.

Manquillo made just ten Premier League appearances in 2014/15 and cut his loan spell short at the end of the campaign.

It's not that he was particularly bad but Manquillo just didn't really do anything of note at Anfield.

5) Rickie Lambert

By now you'll have worked out that the summer of 2014 was not good business for Liverpool - Lambert is mid-table in these rankings.

You feel bad for criticising a guy who was clearly loving life playing for the side he supported as a boy.

But signing a 32-year-old player proved to be a short-sighted decision by the club as he managed just three goals in his only season, none of them coming at Anfield.

4) Dejan Lovren

It's been a journey for Lovren in his six years at Liverpool.

For a while, it looked like £20m down the drain but Lovren certainly improved after Virgil van Dijk's arrival in January 2018.

It's something of a love-hate relationship Liverpool fans have for Lovren. He was worshipped after his dramatic winner against Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League quarter-finals in 2016.

But at the same time he had the propensity to slip back into old habits. The decision to let him leave is probably the correct one.

3) Divock Origi

Origi spent his first season as a Liverpool player on loan at former club Lille where he ended up in L'Equipe's worst XI of the season… but it would be unfair to judge him on something he's not done in a Liverpool strip.

Generally, his time at Anfield has been quiet but the striker has a knack for bringing his 'A Game' when it matters the most.

He scored crucial goals in the miraculous Champions League win over Barcelona in May 2019 as well as in the final which Liverpool won. Origi has also scored in a number of Merseyside derbies which will always go down well with the Anfield faithful.

A true cult hero.

2) Emre Can

How he must be kicking himself for leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2018 as this was when they started to become an elite side. But there's no denying the Germany international had quality.

Can's Liverpool career gradually got going when he was moved into a three-man defence, which shored things up at the back in the second half of 2014/15.

He duly moved up to midfield and was a mainstay in the starting XI for three years before joining Juventus, a move which didn't work out at all.

Arguably Can's best moment at Liverpool saw him score an incredible overhead kick at Watford, a strike that gave the Reds a victory which ultimately helped them qualify for the Champions League again.

1) Adam Lallana

Out on top has to be Lallana, even if he was a bit-part player at Anfield for his final three years.

The midfielder settled in much better than any of the other signings and established himself in the first-team.

Lallana was at his best in the 2016/17 season, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists as Liverpool got that all-important fourth spot in the Premier League.

Rotten luck with injuries prevented him from competing with Liverpool's improving squad but when he did get a chance he'd always give 100 per cent. Like Lovren, getting his Premier League winners' medal was the perfect way to sign off.

Although they lost their best player in Luis Suarez, pocketing £75million was a great chance for Liverpool to improve their squad in 2014.
