Toney 'setting Premier League alight' and should be in England squad, talkSPORT told

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor was keen to praise the Brentford man ahead of Saturday's west London derby between the Bees and Chelsea.

It's fair to say that newly promoted Brentford's fine start to life in England's top tier has been hugely helped by Toney. The 25-year-old has scored twice so far and always poses a huge attacking threat.

"I watched him last season in the Championship and I was intrigued to see if he could make the step up," Agbonlahor admitted when giving his opinion on Toney. "But he's set the Premier League alight.

"He holds the ball up well, he can score goals, he's good in the air - he's done outstanding."

When asked if he could see Toney making an England breakthrough, Agbonlahor echoed his fellow talkSPORT host Darren Ambrose and didn't hold back on where he could see Toney featuring in the Three Lions team.

He added: "When you're watching England [on Tuesday night] you're thinking he probably would've done a better job than Harry Kane in his current form, so he's definitely one for me that Southgate's probably looking at."

It was rumoured that Toney had interest from Wolves this summer, but the Bees star man turned the offer down.

This didn't surprise Agbonlahor, given Brentford had been promoted off the back of a fantastic season for the striker which saw him score an impressive 31 goals.

"If you're a club like Brentford you probably wouldn't even entertain an offer," he explained.

"I think if Brentford didn't come up he would've left, but you're not going to leave a club that's just been promoted."

When questioned on what sort of calibre player Toney is, the Villa legend predicted that the Brentford talisman could be pushing to play in Europe.

Agbonlahor said: "I could picture him in a West Ham team or at Everton. I think he's got what it takes to be in a team that's fighting for Europe.

"Even somewhere like Aston Villa as a target man, playing with Watkins."

And in terms of his long-term future at Brentford, Agbonlahor was clear it depended on what direction the club ends up heading in.

"We don't know what Brentford's next step will be," the talkSPORT presenter said.

"The way they're playing and the teams they're beating they might be the team that start next season pushing for Europe."

The Bees currently sit seventh and a win against Chelsea this weekend could see the Premier League new boys climb as high as third.

It may be early days, but if Brentford's form continues it's hard to argue against Agbonlahor's view that Toney could play both in Europe and for his country whilst at the Bees.
