Solskjaer's summer signing still has plenty of work to do to prove worth

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might no longer be at the club but his signing in the summer has yet to have an impact at Manchester United.

Behind the scenes, the Red Devils have worked to build the best coaching staff possible and Ralf Rangnick has had a major impact there.

Joining the German coach is Sascha Lense, Chris Armas and Ewan Sharp but several Solskjaer appointments remain.

They include Eric Ramsay, who arrived in the summer from Chelsea tasked with one job - working on set-pieces.

The logic was faultless, United had looked miserable from set plays - it was a corner that was their undoing in the Europa League final against Villarreal.

Chelsea, on the other hand, looked a force from deadball situations - particularly corners where a ninth of their total number of goals came from last season.

The appointment of Ramsay was heralded as a major coup - the tactician behind the Blues' success - and also rid a Premier League rival of a top coach.

At the time, Solskjaer said: "He's a very highly rated coach who is going to be working with individuals and in charge of set-plays as well. We're excited.

"He's young, fresh and with new ideas, an innovative coach we know from before."

However, it has not quite worked out that way and United have not scored a set-piece goal all season, The Times has relayed.

In fact, they are not the only side in the Premier League not to yet - with Liverpool leading the table with 10, following by Manchester City on nine whereas next-bottom club Norwich have netted twice.

What is more baffling is that the Red Devils are naturally a gigantic side, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay and Cristiano Ronaldo all powerful headers of the ball.

But as it stands, United are way behind their total goals from set plays last season in the Premier League of seven - though there has been some improvement on the other side of the pitch.

Throughout the campaign, they have conceded just four times from such situations so far this season, putting them among the top sides along with Liverpool - who have let in three.

Last season, United had a miserable record trying to defend set-pieces - conceding 14 times throughout the term which was the second-worst in the whole league.

While Ramsay might have been working hard on preventing goals rather than scoring them, the fact that the Old Trafford outfit have looked so meek attacking from corners and free-kicks must lie at his door.

There are some great deadball takers in the squad as well, including Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford, and whether Rangnick will take action remains to be seen.
