Manchester City's Callum Doyle completes Leicester City loan move

sportsmole.co.uk, 14 July 2023, 19:21
Leicester City have completed the signing of Manchester City defender Callum Doyle on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old, who is yet to make a senior appearance for the Citizens, departs the Etihad Stadium on a temporary basis for the third successive campaign after spending the last two seasons on loan with Sunderland and Coventry City.

Doyle made his professional debut during his time on loan with Sunderland in League One, and he featured 39 times as the Black Cats secured promotion via the playoffs from the third tier.

The left-footed centre-back then established himself as a first-team regular in the Championship with Coventry, starting 42 times including the playoff final defeat to Luton Town on penalties.

Doyle will continue his development in the second tier with Leicester, who were relegated from the Premier League last season and have since appointed former Man City assistant Enzo Maresca as their new head coach.

The teenager becomes the Foxes' third signing of the summer transfer window after the permanent arrivals of Conor Coady and Harry Winks.

Speaking to Leicester's official website on his arrival at the club, Doyle said: "It's great to come to work in a place like this. I'm excited to get going.

"I've worked with Enzo before and we won the Under-23s Premier League title with him. That was a very good season for me and it set me up for the first loan move when I was 17.

"He improved me a lot so it's good to work with him again. He's very on it as a manager. He's obviously very tactically proven. His player management is unbelievable as well. It's always good to have a one-to-one [relationship] with the manager."

Doyle added: "Playing alongside experienced players obviously helps me. I try to watch them and learn from them as much as I can. Especially with Conor here now, I'll take as much experience as I can from him and hopefully put it into my game."

Discussing what he intends to bring to Leicester on the pitch, the England Under-20 international said: "I'm comfortable on the ball. I like to make things happen, bring the ball from the 'keeper, get the midfield involved and hopefully create some chances.

"I think it's important in the modern game to get on the ball, move it, and this season, with the squad that we have, we think we'll do really well.

"I'm hoping to win promotion. That's what's on everyone's mind right now, obviously to get the club where it belongs."

Doyle could make his Leicester debut when they begin life back in the Championship with a home encounter against Coventry on August 6.
