Succession star reveals Glenn Hoddle rejected chance to feature in Beckham documentary

The former England manager handed future Three Lions captain David Beckham the first of his 115 caps in 1996.

But despite playing a big role in Beckham's early career, Hoddle declined the opportunity to be involved in the documentary.

Joining talkSPORT Drive to discuss the series, 'Succession' star Fisher Stevens explained why the former Tottenham man was absent.

"Well why don't we call him right now and ask him," he said. "I called him and asked him to be in it many times.

"I mean, I didn't personally, but we contacted his people. I guess he just wasn't interested in being in the series."

The new documentary, which takes a deep dive into Beckham's rise to stardom, unsurprisingly covers the moment that David Beckham was sent off against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup.

The ex-Manchester United star, just 23 years old at the time, was heavily criticised by the media and fans and Hoddle appeared to blame him for his side's World Cup exit in the last 16 in his post-match.

Beckham's wife, former Spice Girl Victoria, revealed in the series just how furious she was with Hoddle failing to protect her husband in the fall out.

"Glenn Hoddle didn't come out and try to protect him," she said. "And how old was David, 23?

"You're a kid at 23. Glenn Hoddle was a man. I wouldn't say a man actually, he was an older person."

Hoddle's response and side of the story certainly would have made for fascinating TV, but despite that not being part of the series, Stevens says Hoddle features heavily in 'Beckham'.

He continued: "But he's in it quite a bit, obviously and meant a lot to David in his life.

"He was a big character in his life."
