Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City stars set to miss big games due to Brazil issue

talksport.com, 4 October 2021, 15:58
Several of the Premier League's Brazilian players are set to miss crucial matches on their return from the international break, due to quarantine rules on returning from the South American country.

Liverpool's key duo Alisson and Fabinho are to miss crucial clashes against Watford and in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid after being called up for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

As it stands, players will be forced to observe a mandatory ten-day quarantine upon their return to the UK from three red-listed countries - which includes Brazil.

The English-based players called up by Brazil are Alisson and Fabinho from Liverpool, Ederson and Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, Emerson Royal of Tottenham, Thiago Silva from Chelsea, Manchester United midfielder Fred and Raphinha from Leeds.

The government has given the green light for an exemption for elite footballers, where they permit players to leave quarantine once a day to train or play - but they still require to fulfil the period of self-isolation.

The other Brazilian players from other clubs will also miss key matches as Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel revealed centre-back Silva will not be back for the Brentford trip on Saturday, October 16.

The ten-day quarantine means Liverpool could be without Alisson and Fabinho for their league clash against Watford on October 16, as well as their trip to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday October 19.

Speaking about missing Silva, Tuchel told Chelsea's official website after the Blues' victory over Southampton on Saturday: "He will go and then he will play for Brazil, and then he will come back on the matchday versus Brentford.

"This is the life of international breaks in 2021. Like it or not, what can I do?

"He's our player and he arrives on the matchday back from a country where he then needs to do quarantine.

"Is this a good solution for us as a club? No, but we cannot hold him back. It's impossible.

"If they call him, he needs to go, otherwise he gets suspended by FIFA. So there is no choice. You simply have to live with it."
