Dominic Solanke could make Liverpool more money after his Bournemouth U-turn

mirror.co.uk, 4 November 2021, 08:52

When Liverpool sold striker Dominic Solanke to Bournemouth in 2019, many Reds fans praised the deal.

After all, he had scored just once in 27 outings for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Therefore, to recoup an initial fee of £19million was seen by many as something of a masterstroke, particularly when he initially struggled with the Cherries, taking a whopping 18 months before he netted his first league goal for Bournemouth.

Sadly it came at the end of a forgettable campaign in which they were relegated from the top flight after a five-season stay.

Last year though Solanke really came of age scoring 15 times as Bournemouth reached the Championship play-offs; unfortunately they fell short and were beaten by eventual winners Brentford in the semi-finals.

Can Solanke help fire Bournemouth to promotion? Let us know in the comments section

Dominic Solanke has 11 goals to his name this term

This season Solanke has picked up where he left off, scoring an impressive 11 goals in just 16 games so far.

His old club will be watching with plenty of interest, especially if another club decides to take a punt on the 24-year-old once the transfer window reopens in January.

That is the only way that the Reds will receive a handsome sell-on fee. The Liverpool Echo reports that all the add-ons that were included in the deal which took the striker to the Vitality Stadium have been activated, with most being paid.

That means the deal for Solanke will have set Bournemouth back a total of £24million.

Liverpool will not benefit if the Cherries are promoted this season. That is because they were still a top flight club when the deal was done so no relevant promotion clause was inserted.

But Klopp's side did include a 20 per cent profit sell-on clause and a buyback clause.

Bournemouth would need to sell Solanke for more than £24m for that first clause to be activated, with it being understood they would be looking to receive at least £35million for his services if he was to move on in January or next summer.

Therefore, if such a deal was to materialise, Liverpool would be in line to bank a further £2.2m.

Solanke played the full 90 minutes on Wednesday night as Scott Parker's side suffered their first league defeat of the season. They lost 2-1 at home to Preston North End as the EFL's last remaining unblemished record bit the dust.

Scott Parker says Dominic Solanke is as good a striker as anyone at Championship level

Speaking earlier this season about Solanke, Parker believes he is as good as anyone at this level.

He said: "I think he's a top forward, very pleased to have him and grateful he's in our team really.

"I think he's a top forward in this division and has got massive attributes. Scored goals last year and he's on the upward curve really.

"I think he's a modern-day centre-forward, which is very good. I still think there's loads of areas of his game he needs to work on and tidy up.

"But what he has got, he's got a work ethic first and foremost. He's someone that physically is very, very good and is not shy of using that.

"At that point you've always got a great, sound base. And then on the flip side he knows where the goal is."
