Michael Owen names his three favourites to win this season's Champions League

Michael Owen has claimed Liverpool are one of his favourites to win the Champions League this season and feels their toughest opponents could come in the form of fellow Premier League sides Chelsea and Man City.

The Reds made light work of Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday night, Jurgen Klopp 's men seeing out a comfortable 2-0 home win to seal their place in the latter stages of the competition.

The victory also ensures they will finish top of Group B with two games to spare and potentially hands them a more favourable draw in the round of 16.

Liverpool boast an illustrious history in European football's most coveted competition, lifting the trophy six times, with Klopp already guiding the club to two Champions League finals during his tenure, losing in 2018 to Real Madrid before defeating Tottenham a year later.

Owen believes as "favourites" his old side can expect another enjoyable campaign in Europe having cruised through their tricky group - containing Atletico Madrid, AC Milan and Porto - thus far.

The ex-England international believes Liverpool's biggest threats to the trophy come in the form of their Premier League rivals however.

Thomas Tuchel's side are the current holders having toppled Premier League champions City in last season's final.

While both Chelsea and Man City are yet to officially confirm their passage to the knockout rounds, both are in prime position to do so.

Pep Guardiola's City side enjoyed an emphatic victory over Club Brugge on Wednesday, running riot in the second half to register a 4-1 win.

After the full-time whistles at Anfield and the Etihad, Owen was pressed by BT Sport on whether he considers Liverpool favourites for the competition.

"I think English football and the Premier League is so far ahead of everyone else at the moment and getting even stronger," Owen explained.

"We've been ahead for a few years anyway and then we've taken the two best players in the Italian league in Ronaldo and Lukaku.

" Lionel Messi 's gone to a weaker league so the Spanish league has got weaker. I can never really take the French league as seriously as maybe I should.

"We're taking the best managers as well. I think the biggest dangers to Liverpool are probably Man City and Chelsea."

Owen went on to cite one advantage Liverpool boast over every team in the competition, including Chelsea and Man City - their ground.

"You look at the Anfield factor, I just can't get that out of my head. Good luck going there in the second leg of a European tie.

"They are almost unbeatable at Anfield - you'd have to say that Liverpool are favourites."
