Griezmann's angry reaction to Atletico Madrid red card vs Liverpool

Antoine Griezmann was furious with referee Danny Makkelie for sending off teammate Felipe during Atletico Madrid's 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday.

The Brazilian centre-back was shown a straight red by the Dutch official after 36 minutes at Anfield for a challenge from behind on Sadio Mane.

Makkelie was expected to produce a yellow card for the cynical foul, as most referees do, but stunned everyone by dismissing the Atletico player.

Speaking on commentary, former Liverpool ace Steve McManaman assumed the red card was for Felipe ignoring the referee several times.

He said: "I've no idea why he's given a red card... It's not a red for the tackle, it's a yellow. And then he does ask him, on a number of occasions, to come here."

Ex-Premier League striker Dion Dublin, meanwhile, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "You don't always see those given - I was expecting a yellow."

But UEFA have since confirmed Felipe was shown his marching orders for the tackle as he made no attempt to play the ball.

And Griezmann, who was forced to watch the game from the sidelines after being sent off in the reverse fixture two weeks ago, couldn't believe the decision.

He tweeted moments later: "Against everything and against everyone #AtletiForever."

Liverpool had already established their 2-0 goal lead when Felipe was dismissed, although the decision did restrict Atletico's comeback bid.

Former Reds striker Luis Suarez thought he'd halved the deficit in the second half but his deflected goal was disallowed for offside by VAR.

Speaking after the match, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted the red card had a negative impact on the game as a spectacle.

The German told BT Sport: "With the red card, well, you don't like that, you don't want to play against 10 men but in the end it's 2-0 and it was a great night."

Liverpool's victory guarantees them top spot in Group B and a place in the last 16 with two games to go after four consecutive wins.

Atletico, meanwhile, will be hoping to win their last two games against Porto and AC Milan to qualify for the knock-out stages.

Discussing the win, Klopp said: "You earn a lot of money to win Champions League games! The first target was to get through this group. But we did it with two games to go.

Who will be the best player in the world in four years time? Have your say!

"What can we do? We will have to see. I didn't expect we would be through after four games but the boys did it and it's really well deserved."

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold added: "It was an important one for us. Every game is important but we stuck to our gameplan.

"We got those early goals. We have learnt our lesson from Madrid when we were 2-0 up. We were able to see it through and dominate the game."
