Pierre-Emerick Aubemayang admits he's only 3rd quickest player in Arsenal squad

Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed he is no longer the fastest player in the Gunners squad and believes that two defenders are in fact quicker than him.

Mikel Arteta's side are in great form of late having been sat at the bottom of the Premier League table after the first few games of the season.

Arsenal lost their first three games of the new campaign but have been unbeaten since, with the manager starting to get the best out of his new-look side.

Arteta spent £149million over the summer on several different players all under the age of 24, but the manager kept faith in Aubameyang due to his presence in the final third.

The Gabon international is mainly known for his blistering pace when running in behind, but there may be two other players who opposition clubs need to be weary of when they break forward.

Asked if the 32-year-old was still the quickest player at Arsenal, Aubameyang told Yianni : "I think no.

"I think we've got some players that are really quick.

"We have never done a real race because if we do that I have my chances.

"At 80-100 metres I'm sure I'm one of the best.

"But in 30 metres, we've got some quick players, like Kieran Tierney and Nuno Tavares - they are really quick in their first steps."

The former Borussia Dortmund forward then joked: "When I was 18, 19 years old I'd kill them. 100 per cent."

Tavares arrived at the Emirates Stadium in the summer from Benfica for £7m and has impressed in his six appearances so far this season.

The Portuguese full-back has looked dangerous in the final third for the Gunners but has the pace and energy to track back if his side are dispossessed.

Tierney arrived at Arsenal in 2019 but has only made 50 appearances for the club since his arrival, playing as a wingback, left-back and also as left-sided centre-back on occasions too.

The 24-year-old's time at the Emirates has been hindered by injuries.

The former Celtic defender is currently sidelined with an ankle injury that has kept him out for the last three weeks and it is unconfirmed when the fullback will return.

But Scotland manager Steve Clarke feels that Arsenal fans will see the player back fit sooner rather than later, revealing that he had been told by the north London club that they want him to play a part against Watford this weekend.

Speaking about whether Tierney will be included in the Scotland squad for the upcoming international break, Clarke said : "I think Kieran will be on the plane and, if he's on the plane, he'll be fit,"

"That's my opinion but look, you have to respect the club and the club are telling us he's working his way back to fitness.

"They're hopeful he could be involved this weekend (against Watford) but if he (only) gets a few days training in, then fine. We don't play until a week on Friday, so he's got time on his side. I expect that Kieran will be fit."

It remains to be seen whether the Gunners are able to fulfil their wish of playing Tierney, and if so then it will be interesting to see whether he returns with the same burst of pace that Aubameyang mentioned.
