Arsenal's preferred summer transfer plans could see Tottenham rivalry reignited

Arsenal's transfer plans in the summer could revive an old rivalry at Tottenham between two players.

That is if the Gunners can convince Napoli star Victor Osimhen to make the move to the club in the summer.

The Nigeria international is one of the top targets at the Emirates as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his strike force.

After already losing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Barcelona in the January transfer window, the forwards at the club are looking threadbare.

It has left Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah as the only strikers left at the north London outfit while they are hardly the long-term answers to Arteta's problems.

Both are out of contract at the end of the season and have rarely impressed in front of goal with just three Premier League goals between them - all scored by Lacazette.

And Arsenal will make signing a forward a priority in the summer which has led them to pursue Napoli's Osimhen.

If the former Lille star does sign for the Gunners, that would rekindle an old Tottenham rivalry that brewed in Serie A.

Osimhen has unfinished business with Cristian Romero, who he called his toughest opponent when the defender played for Atalanta last season.

After being asked that particular question by Football Italia, Osimhen said: "[Cristian] Romero, who is now at Tottenham.

"He was always faster than me every time we faced each other. The other one is Kalidou Koulibaly, he never let me score in training.

"When Nigeria were eliminated from the Africa Cup of Nations, I supported Senegal."

The two clashed in Italy over a number of entertaining fixtures, including a 4-1 win for Napoli in October 2020 where Osimhen got the better of Romero after scoring.

But Atalanta got their revenge in a 4-2 victory where Romero did manage to shut Osimhen.

The thought of the two locking horns again in a north London derby is a tantalising prospect but prising him away from the Neapolitan club might not be easy for the Gunners.

While the 23-year-old has hardly lit up Serie A this season with six goals so far, Napoli would likely want to recoup much of the £60m fee spent in 2020.

And much might depend on whether Arsenal land Champions League football next season while they currently sit sixth in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Romero has had a difficult campaign in his first year in the Premier League after injuries have ravaged his chances this term.
