Christian Eriksen trains with new club as he eyes emotional return to football

mirror.co.uk, 30 December 2021, 12:43
The Danish international midfielder has not played since collapsing on the pitch at Euro 2020, but is aiming to get his career back on track after his Inter Milan exit was confirmed

It has been a long road back for Christian Eriksen, but the Danish playmaker has taken another step on his path back to competitive football.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020, collapsing on the pitch during Denmark's game against Finland and requiring medical treatment at the side of the pitch, and had an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) inserted after recovering.

Eriksen has not played for his club, Inter Milan, since, and the club confirmed the 29-year-old's contract has been terminated by mutual consent.

He had spent some time back in his home country, training with his boyhood club Odense, and has now relocated to Switzerland as he retains hopes of returning to action in the new year.

Eriksen, who has more than 100 international caps for Denmark, has been spending time with Swiss third-tier club FC Chiasso as he continues to build his fitness back up.

According to Le Matin, the move will allow him to keep himself in shape before he makes his next move, with the publication citing interest from the Premier League and Eredivisie,

The city of Chiasso is close to the Swiss-Italian border, less than 30 miles from Milan, and Le Matin has suggested Eriksen is "in transit" there before finding a new employer.

Eriksen will be able to join a new club as a free agent in January, after Italian football's rules on ICDs made his departure from Inter an inevitability.

A number of Premier League sides may be interested, while there has been talk of a return to Ajax, where the player made his senior debut as a teenager.

"Christian is doing really fine," Eriksen's agent Martin Schoots told Sky Sports earlier this month.

"We're hopeful he can get back in professional football. There is no reason not to be optimistic.

"Every Inter fan, every football fan, looked on in silence, hoping for Christian. Seeing him back in Appiano Gentile with his team-mates, as Italian champions, was a joy to behold and one we will never forget," Inter said in a farewell message accompanying Eriksen's departure.

"Although Inter and Christian are now parting ways, the bond shall never be broken.

"The good times, the goals, the victories, those Scudetto celebrations with fans outside San Siro - all this will remain forever in Nerazzurri history."

Eriksen had been on Inter's books since January 2020, when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur after more than 300 appearances for the London side.

His eight goals for the club included a last-gasp winner against rivals AC Milan in last season's Coppa Italia, and he was part of the side which won Serie A for the first time in more than a decade.
