Arsenal's Ramsdale says he pocketed £17 from Leeds fans during Elland Road clash

Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale didn't have the busiest of afternoons when the Gunners beat Leeds United earlier in the month, but the England international picked up an unexpected extra £17 on the day.

The 23-year-old was beaten from the penalty spot in the 4-1 away win, but spent much of the game watching on as Gabriel Martinelli's first-half double set the London side on their way to a comfortable victory.

Ramsdale has revealed he picked up a tidy bonus, claiming Leeds fans threw enough coins onto the pitch for him to pocket a tidy £17 - even leaving some money unaccounted for on the pitch.

Even more surprisingly, the former Sheffield United and Bournemouth man shed some light on the coin collection he was able to add to thanks to the home crowd.

Ramsdale has had back-and-forths with opposition fans before, most notably in Arsenal's victory against Leicester City.

However, told Ben Foster's podcast the kind of abuse he gets from opposition fans in the Premier League is nothing compared to what he got while coming up in the lower-leagues.

Foster also asked him about the Leeds game, and Ramsdale revealed there was an announcement during the pre-match warm-up urging fans to leave him alone, saying "They were either being serious or getting them to wind me up even more".

However, the coins didn't arrive until after Arsenal had taken the lead.

"After the first [goal], there were some bottles and stuff thrown... a few lighters, and I chucked them off to the side," Ramsdale said.

"The next thing you know, money started coming on...

"I'm looking around and there was one £2 - well, I collect £2s, so I took that.

"Then there's quids and 50ps, so I'm picking them up and I put them by my towel, [then] at half time I put them in my towel, I run off and put them in the changing room."

"Second half comes, a few more come, and then an e-cig comes on just before the penalty," Ramsdale continued.

"So I've gone back in and I'm speaking to Kalvin Phillips, going 'your fans must be loaded' - it was about £17 I pulled off the pitch.

"And I've missed some money - I couldn't pick them all up - it was about £17 I took back in."

Ramsdale has proved popular with Arsenal fans for the speed with which he has adjusted to life at the club, replacing Bernd Leno as the starting goalkeeper and being tipped as a future captain of the club.

The Stoke-born keeper was also named in Jamie Carragher's team of the season, with the pundit saying Ramsdale had changed his mind after early doubts.

"It's not just the saves he's made - he's a personality, he's a character," Carragher said.

"Going into Arsenal as a young lad, a goalkeeper, I just think he's got a presence about him that I didn't see he had and I think he's had a big impact on the team."
