'Worst Man Utd squad in 30 years' and the XI that lost at home to Burnley

mirror.co.uk, 30 December 2021, 08:13
Man Utd were beaten at Old Trafford by Burnley almost two years ago as their squad as declared the club's worst in three decades with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struggling for options

It has been almost two years since a Manchester United squad declared "the worst in the last 30 years" were beaten by Burnley at home.

After some near misses at Old Trafford the Clarets finally toppled the Red Devils on their own patch.

Goals from Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez secured a memorable win for Sean Dyche's men back in January 2020.

It was something of a watershed moment for United, then led by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, as they trudged off the pitch to a chorus of boos.

It left them 30 point off league leaders Liverpool and in something of a mini crisis.

Peter Crouch did not hold back in his criticism of the club, those making the big decisions and their resources

He said on BT Sport after the game: "This squad has got to be the worst squad in the last 30 years, it is nowhere near it.

Have Your Say! How do you rate the current Man Utd squad? Tell us in the comments here.

"You can blame the manager but this squad, you look at the options off the bench and they are miles off.

"It's a sad state of affairs. This is one of the biggest clubs in the world and it has been run badly, it has been mismanaged. I don't know what a Manchester United player is any more."

David de Gea started the night in goal behind a back four of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, Harry Maguire and Brandon Williams - who is now on loan at Norwich City.

Fred and Nemanja Matic began at the base of midfield.

Daniel James, who was sold in the summer, and Andreas Pereira, a man who has been consistently loaned out, formed part of the attack.

Juan Mata and the now wantaway Anthony Martial completed the front four.

Solskjaer's bench included the likes of Angel Gomes, Mason Greenwood and Diogo Dalot.

The Norwegian, following the reverse, had managed to lose more games than he'd won since he was appointed as permanent manager.

A month prior to the Burnley loss United had been beaten at Watford, then the Premier League's basement club.

Solskjaer continued to back youth but with so few senior pros around them there were constant bumps in the road, which Rio Ferdinand put down to their poor recruitment.

He said: "With that (a young squad) come inconsistencies, but, again it goes back to the recruitment, which it always keeps doing.

"If you've been doing your recruitment right you wouldn't have to rely on so many kids."

After the Burnley defeat United bought in Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon and would go the remainder of the campaign undefeated.
