The curious past of Todd Boehly, Chelsea's new owner

The long-awaited takeover of Chelsea Football Club has finally taken place and many are wondering who the new owner is.

Roman Abramovich had been the club's owner since 2003 but it came to a somewhat sudden end in March, as sanctions were placed on him by the UK government following Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Given Abramovich is a Russian oligarch it was deemed that he has had enough professional and personal involvement with Russian president Vladimir Putin to be worthy of sanctions.

That threw the club's future into serious doubt, but he was allowed to sell the club as long as none of the proceeds went to him.

That has eventually led to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital buying the club for 2.5 billion pounds (3.2 billion dollars).

Who is Todd Boehly?

Boehly is an American businessman who is mainly known for being the co-owner of the LA Dodgers, a famous baseball team.

He is 48 years old and was actually a college wrestling star when he was a teenager. That was after attending a private school in Maryland.

He championed successive Interstate Athletic Conference Championships in 1990 and 1991 and his achievements led to the school naming their gym the Boehly Family Wrestling Room in his honour.

He made his money in the banking and investment sector. He is the co-founder, chief executive officer, chairman and controlling member of the private investment firm Eldridge Industries.

After studying at the London School of Economics, he started to work at Citibank and has become immensely successful in the finance sector.

His fortune continued to grow as he created new projects and avenues of income and now it is believed by Forbes that he is worth in the region of 3.5bn pounds (4.4bn dollars).

As well as the LA Dodgers, he also co-owns 17-time NBA champions LA Lakers and women's basketball team LA Sparks.
