Liverpool's plans for next season: Klopp renewed, Mane's departure, a new midfielder...

Lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League final

Despite narrowly missing out on both the Premier League and Champions League titles, Liverpool celebrated a successful 2021/22 campaign with their fans on Sunday.

The Reds beat Chelsea in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals to lift both trophies, but they didn't manage to complete the quadrable.

"I told the boys in the dressing room, after we had a bit of time watching the celebrations of Real Madrid, that I feel the pride already," Jurgen Klopp told Sky Sports after the final.

"But I saw that I was the only one who felt like this at that moment, so the boys need a bit longer.

"I understand that. But these boys played an outstanding season. The two competitions we couldn't win we didn't win because of the smallest possible margin - one point [in the Premier League] and 1-0 [in the Champions League final]."

Meanwhile, Liverpool are already working on their plans ahead of the 2022/23 season which is set to kick off in early August.

Klopp renewed until 2026

The German coach's contract extension until 2026 provides stability to a winning project.

Klopp arrived in October 2015 at a club immersed in a deep crisis, far from the Champions League places and where trophies seemed to be a scarce luxury.

In his six years at the Reds, he has led them to Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup successes, but has also helped them get overcome their previous failure by changing the whole club's mentality.

Main objective: Winning the Premier League and ending Manchester City's dominance

After winning their first Premier League title in 30 years back in 2020, Liverpool have failed to do so again in the last two years.

Pep Guardiola's Manchester City cruised to the title last year, having won four of the last five Premier League trophies.

Liverpool aspire to end the Sky Blues' dominance, despite the imminent arrivals of prodigious forwards Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez at the Etihad Stadium.

"You can't do more than give your absolute best and that's what the boys did again," Klopp said.

"We chased the best team in the world to the wire, that's absolutely special. We'll build a team again and go again."

Mane's departure, Salah's future...

Liverpool's attacking trident is close to breaking up, with the contracts of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino all set to expire next summer.

The latter has lost his place in the starting line-up following the emergence of Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota, with Mane being expected to depart this summer.

"I would like to thank the fans for everything and the coach as well," Mane said.

"I wish this club the best in the world."

Meanwhile, Salah has yet to extend his contract with Liverpool, but the Egypt international has stressed that he will stay put for next season, with the two parties still in talks over a potential renewal.

Divock Origi and Loris Karius will be released in the summer, while James Milner's future is up in the air with his contract ending next month, although he has been offered a new deal by the club.

Liverpool's priority: Signing a midfielder

The Reds have already begun the process of rejuvenating their squad, with the arrivals of certain exciting players over the last year.

"Our players, even when we had injuries and stuff like this, and had only three available up front, they pushed themselves to an extreme extent all the time," Klopp said back in February.

"That's why we were pretty successful in the last few years.

"We cannot hope that we can get through this with three or four players. We need options.

"All development includes fresh blood. That's what we did with Diogo when he came here and it was obviously pretty helpful, and now when we signed Luis it's exactly the same."

Ibrahima Konate (23 years old) and Luis Diaz (25) have joined Trent Alexander-Arnold (23), Curtis Jones (21), Harvey Elliott (19) and Diogo Jota (25), while 19-year-old playmaker Fabio Carvalho will join the club from Fulham in July.

As MARCA has reported, Liverpool's main target in midfield is Monaco's Aurelien Tchouameni, as they look to find a player to complement Jordan Henderson (31), Thiago Alcantara (31) and Naby Keita (27).

Set to expand Anfield

Liverpool will increase the capacity of Anfield from 53,394 to 61,000 spectators.

Meanwhile, they've replaced the historic Melwood training ground with the new AXA Training Centre.
