Solskjaer failed to sign PSG star as he couldn't sell midfielders

talksport.com, 1 November 2021, 17:32
Manchester United struggled to hit the ground running this season but things could have been very different.

Lacking cover in central midfield, the Red Devils missed out on a pivotal signing in the summer window that could've made a big difference to their campaign.

In the light of Nemanja Matic's poor form, Paul Pogba being rumoured to be heading for the exit and a lack of defensive midfielders, Manchester United looked to the market at the end of last season.

And one man that caught United's eye was Paris Saint Germain's Idrissa Gueye.

Gueye previously played in the Premier League for Aston Villa and Everton until he made the move to Paris in 2019 for £30 million, winning the domestic treble and losing a Champions League final in his first season.

So it's understandable then that Ole was chasing the Senegalese's signature.

But, according to the Mail on Sunday, despite talks with the midfielder, a deal never materialised due to United's inability to offload players such as Jesse Lingard and Matic, making Ole's dream of defensive stability fade.

What will leave an even worse taste in United fans' mouths is Gueye was keen to join the Manchester outfit at the time of their interest due to fears of being pushed out of the PSG team by new signing Gini Wijnaldum.

However since then Gueye has enjoyed a great season so far for the Ligue One side, scoring four goals this campaign and playing alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Neymar.

Perhaps then Ole's side would have avoided losses such as the 5-0 defeat to rivals Liverpool had they secured Gueye's signature this summer.
