Rio Ferdinand's sarcastic reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo reaching 801 goals

Cristiano Ronaldo was in red-hot form on Thursday night and netted twice as Manchester United edged Arsenal in a five-goal thriller at Old Trafford, forcing Rio Ferdinand into a sarcastic reaction online.

With incoming interim boss Ralf Rangnick in the stands, Ronaldo produced a fine display as United were 3-2 winners on the night, enjoying success at home for the first time in the Premier League since September.

Ronaldo rose to the occasion in trademark style, and became the first player in history to score 800 top-level career goals, shortly after becoming the mens all-time international goalscorer.

Rangnick must have been impressed from the stands, and former teammate Ferdinand spoke out to silence any critics.

United have endured a wretched run of form, and their win over Arsenal was the first at Old Trafford in the league since Ronaldo's second debut, as the Red Devils thrashed Newcastle 4-1.

It was also their first Premier League win since October, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paying the ultimate price for failing to inspire a United win throughout the whole of November.

United's form have left fans and pundits pointing the finger in various directions, and Ronaldo was naturally one of the scape goats as their Premier League form has dipped since he returned to the club.

However, after two second half goals against Arsenal to hand United the win, Ferdinand took to Twitter and said: "Cristiano is still the problem I see".

Ronaldo's style of play has altered over the years, and the speedy wide player has evolved into an 18-yard specialist, who is deadly at finishing chances rather than creating them.

No side in the world would be weakened by having the five-time Ballon d'Or winner spearhead the attack, but some fans were starting to question whether Ronaldo's style was having a detrimental affect on United's form, although the critics have been silenced for now.

There was also talk that Ronaldo may not be in Rangnick's immediate plans, as the German is known for his gegenpressing philosophy that see's players press from the front, but the 36-year-old has never been one to close down opponents on the chase.

Regardless of Rangnick's ideas, the German must have been impressed last night as he watched from the stands while pondering his first team selection on Sunday, as he takes charge against Crystal Palace.

Ronaldo's incredible goal scoring tally sees him reach 801 career goals at the top level, with 130 coming over two spells at United, five at Sporting Lisbon, 101 for Juventus, 115 for Portugal and a staggering 450 for Real Madrid.

Although Lionel Messi picked up a record seventh Ballon d'Or recently, Ronaldo's incredible numbers have thrown him right back into the conversation over who it the greatest of all time, with the Argentinian struggling to match his numbers since heading to Paris Saint Germain.
