Ronaldo and Rangnick showdown talks predicted with clash of "egos"

Cristiano Ronaldo must hold clear-the-air talks with Ralf Rangnick and both should put their egos "on the side" as a new chapter begins at Manchester United.

That is the verdict of Thierry Henry, who warned Ronaldo and his new manager will need to compromise in order to strike up a working relationship.

Rangnick was announced as United's new interim manager on Monday on a deal until the end of the season.

The German inherits a squad accustomed to a sitting back and counter-attacking, but he will demand they press high up the pitch to win the ball in advanced areas.

There are widespread doubts over Ronaldo's ability to lead the line in such an intense system at the age of 36, as he has not performed such a role for many seasons.

Arsenal legend Henry shares these concerns and expects the only way forward is for the Portuguese superstar and Rangnick to each "give up a little bit".

"We shouldn't talk about the man, what he can achieve, what he can do, or what he did achieve and what he can still do," Henry said of Ronaldo on Prime Video.

"Now, it's going to have to be a discussion between Rangnick and him because we all know that's part of the game he lacks the most and that is part of the game Rangnick likes the most: pressing and counter pressing.

"So, they need to have a discussion on who is going to give up a little bit on what they usually like to do and egos going to have to be put on the side at one point for the good of this club.

"It shouldn't be a Ronaldo thing or a Rangnick thing, they need to find a way to pull this club forward."

Although he draws criticism for a perceived lack of work rate up front, Ronaldo has been impressive since his return this summer and he is United's top scorer this season by a considerable margin.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has six goals in five Champions League appearances and scored his fifth and sixth Premier League goals during Thursday night's clash with Arsenal including the winner.

The first of those took Ronaldo up to 800 career goals - the first player to reach that milestone.

Playmaker Bruno Fernandes is second in United's scoring charts and also added to his tally against the Gunners.

Ronaldo will come face to face with Rangnick for the first time later this week when the 63-year-old takes charge of training for the first time.

The former RB Leipzig boss will manage his first United game when Crystal Palace come calling at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
