Keane slams "disgrace" Maguire over "embarrassing" reaction to Man Utd critics

Roy Keane has laid into Manchester United captain Harry Maguire for his "embarrassing" reaction to his recent critics.

Maguire has been in terrible form for his club side in recent weeks as the pressure has piled on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following several bad results.

The 28-year-old was offered a reprieve by international boss Gareth Southgate, though, who selected him in his latest England squad for this week's World Cup qualifiers and picked Maguire to start the clash vs Albania.

Southgate's faith was quickly rewarded by the centre-back, who powered home a header after just nine minutes to give England the lead.

Maguire was naturally delighted to get on the scoresheet amid his disappointing spell, but his celebration attracted fury from ITV pundit Keane, who delivered a scathing assessment at half-time.

"He puts his hands to his ears like he's shutting his critics up... it's embarrassing," Keane blasted.

"He's been a disgrace last few months for Manchester United, he scores and he thinks he's going to shut his critics up, it's embarrassing."

His fellow pundits were in agreement that it was an unnecessary and naive gesture from the Three Lions star.

"You just don't need to do it," Ian Wright said. "It's something I probably would have done, but you don't need to do that because you've got a lot of football still to play.

"Don't give them the opportunity to say 'right, we've got to him'.

"Just play your game, Harry."

Jermain Defoe concurred: "Yeah you don't need to do it.

"He's scored the goal, it's a good goal, but you don't need to do that.

"What it does is puts a sour taste in people's mouths, they don't like that, it gives people the opportunity to wait for that bad performance again and have a go at him."

Fortunately for Maguire, he had no worries about his celebration coming back to bite him on the field, as England stormed to a thumping win, helped largely by Harry Kane's first-half hat-trick.

Jordan Henderson also got on the scoresheet in a convincing win for Southgate's men as they edge closer to qualifying for next year's World Cup in Qatar.

Maguire wasn't the only United player in Keane's crosshairs, though, as he spotted "something wrong" with all of his old clubs Three Lions representatives.

Both Mason Greenwood and Jadon Sancho were left out of this squad for different reasons, while Marcus Rashford was forced to pull out due to injury.

"Every case is different, Sancho hasn't been getting many minutes recently," Keane said.

"The issue I suppose with Rashford and Greenwood is that whenever they're selected it seems to be an issue.

"I know they've had injuries, I understand that, but we know their quality and when Gareth is asked about them he says 'yeah I spoke to Marcus...' It seems like a big conversation.

"It's as if there's something going wrong, there's something amiss with some of these United lads."
