David de Gea slamming Man Utd teammate 'highlights huge problem at Old Trafford'

mirror.co.uk, 12 November 2021, 17:02
The Manchester United shot-stopper was spotted lambasting one of his teammates during the recent derby day defeat to local rivals and 'noisy neighbours' Man City

David de Gea 's recent on-pitch outburst at Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw is indicative of the Red Devils problems in recent years according to former player Paul Parker.

The United goalkeeper was seen furiously ranting at his defender following Manchester City 's second goal in the recent derby defeat which in turn heaped further pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has come in for serious criticism after overseeing a particularly dismal run of form which has contained humiliating defeats to both Liverpool and City - the former battering United 5-0 on home soil.

Though the score-line against City was a more respectable 2-0, Pep Guardiola 's men rarely having to break a sweat as they passed their rivals into submission.

In response, Parker has claimed that both Solskjaer and his coaching staff need to be more vocal when disciplining players instead of leaving it to the likes of De Gea on the pitch.

Solskjaer's backroom team contains big names such as Michael Carrick and Mike Phelan, but has not escaped criticism as United appear to be out of the title race already.

Parker praised the members of coaching staff that Sir Alex Ferguson employed during his 26-year tenure, as well as citing big characters in the dressing room like Roy Keane.

"He [Solskjaer] needs someone to come in next to him who can help him improve that squad. Start calling out the individuals. Start telling people," Parker told BetfredTV.

"We're in a world now where people can't shout at people because they get upset. Find out about them. Get them upset. Tell them the truth about their game. It hurts.

"Roy Keane would have told you that you were crap on a Monday morning. In this current United side, none of them are shouting at one another."

Parker went on to highlight a prime example of the majority of players opting to stay silent in the wake of big mistakes.

"Luke Shaw made a massive mistake in the derby which he should have dealt with. It didn't start from him but it finished with him.

"He could have dealt with that and then turned round, saw where it came from and then pointed his finger.

"The only one having a go was David De Gea. You need someone in there to call players out. It's your job."

Parker did not stop there - instead, he went as far as accusing some players of only playing for the club as a means of boosting their image.

"A lot of that squad are just happy to be at the club and to tell people who they play for.

"They enjoy just being recognised as a Manchester United player, rather than being a Manchester United player who is competing to win big games and win trophies."
