Wright explains Sancho's struggles at Man Utd and situation "affecting him"

Ian Wright has spoken out on Jadon Sancho 's struggles at Manchester United this season - and admits that United's recent tactical switch has done the winger no favours.

Sancho finally completed a £73million summer move to Old Trafford to conclude a two-year transfer saga.

But the 21-year-old has endured a miserable start to life in the Premier League following his switch from Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho is still yet to register a goal or an assist for United despite making 13 appearances - although the majority of those have come from the bench.

And former England and Arsenal striker Wright believes that Sancho's struggles are down to him playing in a team that doesn't fit him following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's recent switch to a 3-4-1-2 system.

"When I look at Rashford I don't blame him for taking that time to recover more," Wright said on ITV when discussing the form of United and England stars Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

"I know he hasn't been in some of the squads but we saw a player who was thrashed in the way he was playing, playing with injuries, continuing to play when he wasn't quite right.

"If he's going to take the time now to get a little bit more rest...

"It's the same with Sancho. He's playing in a team that isn't built for him, they play three at the back but he's a winger. He can't get into the team at the moment, whether that's form or whatever, he can't get into the team.

"You think yeah of course that's affecting him.

"Greenwood, he's young enough, hopefully he'll continue doing what he's doing and force himself in.

"I'd like to see Greenwood in the World Cup squad when that happens because that's when we'll get the best out of him.

"But Rashford, take that time to recover and do what you're doing.

"Sancho needs a structure in the team to get the best out of him."

Although Solskjaer's decision to alter his formation is set to hamper Sancho, the winger had struggled to make an impression at Old Trafford prior to the recent tactical tweak.

Solskjaer has seemingly limited Sancho's minutes as a result, although recent reports have indicated an unusual idea from the Norwegian to try and kickstart Sancho's United career.

The Athletic reported earlier this week that Solskjaer and his staff have deployed Sancho as a right wing-back in training sessions.

Even if Sancho can adapt his game to that unusual role, it's certainly not a position that the youngster would have been expecting to fill after his mega-money transfer.

Despite those reports, and fears that Sancho isn't a natural fit for United's new formation, Solskjaer insisted as recently as last month that the winger would still be a success at Old Trafford.

"Jadon was exceptional, he was electric. The crowd loved him and I think he felt that connection," said Solskjaer following United's 2-1 win over Villarreal in the Champions League at the end of September.

"He was direct, positive, he went past the full-back numerous times. Yes, he's not scored yet but I thought, 'that's Jadon and we're going to see lots of that'."
