Gary Lineker aims dig at Robbie Savage after his son Charlie makes Man Utd debut

Gary Lineker has aimed a light-hearted dig at Robbie Savage after his son Charlie made his Manchester United debut.

The youngster made his senior bow for the Red Devils in the Champions League on Wednesday night as they drew 1-1 with Young Boys.

It was a proud moment for his dad Robbie who was commentating on the game for BT Sport and was given the chance to introduce his son by Darren Fletcher as he came on as a substitute.

"It's quite appropriate at this time I step aside and allow you to bring your son on for his first-team debut for Manchester United," said Fletcher.

Savage then said: "Coming on for Manchester United is Charlie Savage for Juan Mata. Wow. I never believed I would say those words.

"What a proud day for my boy. All the hard work. What a day for me, his mother, his nana, his grandparents and most importantly for Charlie Savage.

"I'm so proud of him, Darren. It's an amazing moment for him."

Lineker also wished Charlie well on the impressive milestone but made sure to poke fun at his father in the process.

He tweeted: "Lovely moment as Charlie Savage makes his Man Utd debut with his dad in the commentary box.

"A proud moment for them both. If he's got half of Robbie Savage's ability then he'll be absolutely…hopeless.

"Just kidding, of course. Wish him well."

Robbie was emotional before the match when he heard that Ralf Rangnick had named Charlie on the bench.

He said: "I'm starting to tear up actually, because what the boy has achieved. Charlie Savage has achieved so much in his young life.

"When I'm stood on the sidelines people automatically think Charlie is going to be like his dad. He's not like me, he's his own player. I am absolutely delighted. He has done it on his own with his work ethic - I've not opened any doors for him.

"My father, who is sadly not with us, took me all around the country and he would be proud looking down on his grandson.

"His nana watching from home will be in tears."

As for Savage, he took to social media to celebrate the occasion, posting after the game: "Delighted to have made my first-team debut for Manchester United in the Champions League.

"I would like to thank all the academy staff for their support over the last 14 years and the manager for putting his trust in me tonight"
