Lewandowski was one of a Bundesliga-leading 13 players involved at UEFA Euro 2020. Bayern's prized No.9, who followed up his German top-flight record 41 single-season goals with a further three at the finals for Poland, is currently enjoying a well-earned break before linking back up with his club-mates later this week. The freshly re-crowned Germany Footballer of the Year will be working under a new coach in Julian Nagelsmann, who has overseen a 3-2 loss to Cologne and 2-2 draw with Ajax since taking over from Hansi Flick on 1 July. New signings Omar Richards and Dayot Upamecano were involved in both games, with returning goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and veteran forward Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting - the latter on target against Ajax - also lending their experience to an experimental line-up typical of the early pre-season circuit. Teenaged winger Armindo Sieb has been one of the standouts, while former Paris Saint-Germain defensive specialist Tanguy Nianzou - whose debut campaign at the club was ravaged by injury - is expected to keep his place after opening his account at the weekend. Alphonso Davies and Lucas Hernandez remain on the sidelines.
Gladbach tread the familiar path to Munich on the back of their first win of the Adi Hütter era. After a 3-0 defeat to Paderborn and 2-2 draw with Viktoria Cologne, the Foals scored a 1-0 win over Metz thanks to Conor Noß's solitary strike. With Gladbach's Euro 2020 travellers still unavailable, captain Lars Stindl nursing a knock and Alassane Plea having sustained a worrying knee injury, the Republic of Ireland youth international should have a part to play in the Bavarian capital. English winger Keanan Bennetts and Portuguese attacker Famana Quizera are also pushing for inclusion alongside former New York City FC defender Scally. The American, who turned out for the Gladbach reserves after making the switch to Germany at the turn of the year, has been honing his craft with the seniors in pre-season training. Although a right-back by trade, he has started Hütter's first three matches as head coach on the opposite flank. With Ramy Bensebaini sidelined once more, that is where the ex-NYCFC teammate of Borussia Dortmund and US star Gio Reyna is set to remain. The game is a dress rehearsal for the Bundesliga Matchday 1 opener between the two German giants on 13 August.
