Wednesday's Champions League predictions including Arsenal vs. Sevilla

sportsmole.co.uk, 8 November 2023, 06:00
Napoli vs. Union Berlin (Wednesday, 5.45pm)

Union Berlin's slim chances of qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League could officially be wiped out with defeat to Napoli in Wednesday's Group C clash at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Meanwhile, their hosts sit second in the section with six points to their name and could move within touching distance of a place in the knockout rounds with another positive result.

We say: Napoli 2-0 Union Berlin

To say that Union Berlin are totally devoid of attacking inspiration would be unfair, as the Iron Ones troubled the Napoli backline on several occasions two weeks ago, only to be let down by poor finishing.

However, Fischer's men ought to see their powers wane even more in Naples, where a 13th defeat of the season will end their top-two chances while taking Napoli ever closer to a place in the last-16 draw.

Real Sociedad vs. Benfica (Wednesday, 5.45pm)

Two teams at opposite ends of Group D in the Champions League face off at the Reale Arena on Wednesday night as Real Sociedad play host to Benfica.

The Eagles will be seeking revenge against Txuri-Urdin after they suffered a slender 1-0 defeat to the Spanish outfit in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

We say: Real Sociedad 2-1 Benfica

There is an element of pressure on both teams to claim maximum points on Wednesday, with Real Sociedad seeking to secure top spot in Group D while Benfica must win to keep their top-two hopes alive.

Taking into account the previous meeting between these two sides, another closely-fought contest could be on the cards at the Reale Arena, but we are backing Alguacil's men to navigate their way to a slender success in front of their own fans.

Bayern vs. Galatasaray (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

Bayern Munich can punch their ticket to the knockout rounds of the Champions League with a Group A victory over Galatasaray at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.

The Bavarian giants are seeking to complete the double over their Turkish counterparts after securing a 3-1 win in the reverse fixture two weeks ago.

We say: Bayern Munich 3-1 Galatasaray

Goals are to be expected on Wednesday as Bayern have found the net at least twice in 14 of their last 15 matches across all competitions, while Galatasaray's last five Champions League away visits to Germany have produced a total of 22 goals.

Bayern will be regarded as firm favourites to claim maximum points, though, and they should ultimately have enough firepower to outscore their Turkish opponents en route to booking their place in the last 16.

Copenhagen vs. Man Utd (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

A potentially pivotal Group A contest in the Champions League takes place at Parken Stadium on Wednesday night as Copenhagen play host to Manchester United on matchday four.

The Danish hosts will be seeking revenge against the Red Devils after suffering a slender 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford two weeks ago.

We say: Copenhagen 0-1 Manchester United

Copenhagen have looked strong on home soil in recent weeks and frustrated Bayern Munich for large spells in matchday two before ultimately losing 2-1 to the German side; nevertheless, a similar spirited display is required if they are to cause an upset against Man United.

A tight affair could be in store on Wednesday considering the Red Devils' issues in the final third, but we believe that Ten Hag's men will get the job done and battle their way to another narrow victory to keep their last-16 hopes alive.

Arsenal vs. Sevilla (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

With their Premier League unbeaten run now a thing of the past, Arsenal return to Champions League action with the visit of Sevilla to the Emirates for Wednesday's Group B contest.

The Gunners overcame the Europa League holders 2-1 two weeks ago, and back-to-back successes over the Spaniards could potentially punch their ticket to the knockout rounds with two games to spare.

We say: Arsenal 1-0 Sevilla

No Odegaard meant no creativity for a toothless Arsenal against Newcastle, but a depleted and potentially Ramos-less Sevilla backline should not put up Magpies levels of resistance in North London.

As was the case in Seville, the Gunners are unlikely to march to all three points without suffering a couple of scares along the way, but Arteta's men should have the wherewithal to edge a close contest and claim the triumph which may or may not send them through to the knockout rounds.

PSV vs. Lens (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

Lens have the chance to put one foot firmly in the knockout stages of the Champions League when they head to the Philips Stadion for a Group B date with PSV Eindhoven on Wednesday.

Les Sang et Or sit second in the section with five points to their name, while their hosts are yet to claim a maximum and sit bottom of the four-team standings as a result.

We say: PSV Eindhoven 2-1 Lens

Expected recalls for Wahi and Thomasson in the final third should help Lens rediscover their bite in the final third, but they could certainly do with taking a leaf or two out of PSV's attacking playbook, even if Bosz's team have seen their powers wane continentally.

Haise's troops have also proven time and time again that they are a force to reckon with defensively on the road, but we cannot see Les Sang et Or coming from behind to avoid defeat for a fourth time, as PSV harness their enviable firepower to blow Group B wide open.

Real Madrid vs. Braga (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

A point is all that is required for Real Madrid to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League when Braga pay a visit to the Bernabeu on Wednesday in Group C.

Los Blancos boast a perfect record of three wins from three in continental action so far, seeing them sit two places and six points better off than their Iberian visitors.

We say: Real Madrid 2-0 Braga

Navigating their way to victory without Bellingham is something that Real Madrid have only experienced once so far this season, but given Braga's defensive woes on the road, the Englishman's possible absence should not have a major impact on Wednesday's outcome.

Braga ought to play with the shackles off as they attempt to keep their own top-two hopes alive, but gaps will inevitably open up for the hosts to exploit, and we have faith in Ancelotti's defence to keep the rear door bolted shut and play their part in sealing a top-two finish.

Salzburg vs. Inter Milan (Wednesday, 8.00pm)

Inter Milan will endeavour to secure their spot in the Champions League last 16 when they travel to Austria to face Red Bull Salzburg in Group D on Wednesday night.

The two teams meet at the Red Bull Arena just two weeks after the Nerazzurri claimed a 2-1 victory in the reverse fixture at San Siro on matchday three.

We say: Red Bull Salzburg 1-2 Inter Milan

Salzburg will hope to transfer their recent domestic form onto the Champions League stage as they can ill-afford to lose against Inter if they wish to keep their slim hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

However, the Nerazzurri are a force to be reckoned with at present and should ultimately have too much quality throughout their side, particularly in the final third with Martinez leading the line, for their Austrian counterparts.
