Two England fans arrested for 'Nazi salutes' as Southgate's warning ignored

Two England fans have been arrested for making alleged Nazi salutes at Munich police officers ahead of this evening's UEFA Nations League game against Germany. Police this morning confirmed that seven arrests in total were made last night including one for hitting a police officer and another for possession of a pyrotechnic.

The visiting England supporters, who predominantly gathered at Marienplatz, taunted locals by singing "Ten German bombers" and "Have you ever seen a German win a war." They also sang "No surrender to the IRA" and mocked Scotland missing out on a place at the World Cup while being carefully watched by dozens of riot cops, who attempted to disperse the crowd at around midnight.

About 6,000 England fans are expected to travel to Bavaria for the second game of the competition and there are concerns that many will end up buying tickets in home sections at Allianz Arena.

The FA were given an allocation of 3,466 for the game but the stadium will not be sold out and many vistiors have been purchasing home tickets on the German FA's website, sparking fears of disorder inside the stadium.

Another man was charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle a knife on board a plane destined for Munich on Monday morning. He was stopped by security at Heathrow and is set to appear at Uxbridge Magistrates Court today (Tuesday).

Almost 900 fans who are subject to banning orders have been forced to hand in their passports this week, while the FA and British police have sent teams to Germany to monitor behaviour.

At the weekend England manager Gareth Southgate said that he feels "embarrassed" when he hears about the national team's supporters misbehaving. England will host Italy behind closed doors at Molineux on Saturday night as a punishment for the trouble that spoiled last summer's European Championship final.

"You're embarrassed when you hear about it, because you know it's a representation of your country, in the same way there's been a brilliant representation of that across the world in the last couple of days [with the Jubilee celebrations]," Southgate said. "We can only give the correct messages, then you've got to rely on people behaving.

"We know because of the landscape at the moment that the spotlight is going to be on [England] so we all want to be coming away talking about a brilliant night. We can only ask that's what our supporters deliver."
