Burnley facing Vincent Kompany battle with French club mooting appointment

Vincent Kompany has long been mooted for the vacant managerial role at Burnley but fresh speculation has now suggested he may be on the radar of French club Nice.

The former Manchester City defender recently left his role as boss at Anderlecht and a move to freshly-relegated Burnley, closer to his family who are based in Manchester, is expected to go through before long. But the deal has yet to be rubber-stamped and as such there continues to be speculation regarding other clubs potentially wading in and snaring the Belgian.

German side Borussia Monchengladbach were tentatively linked before they eventually appointed ex-Norwich boss Daniel Farke this week. Now, Nice are said to be monitoring Kompany in the event they suddenly lose their head coach.

Christophe Galtier has been talked up as a possible option for PSG should, as expected, they dispense with the services of existing manager Mauricio Pochettino. The former Spurs man has only been in charge since January 2021 but despite winning last season's Ligue 1 he appears destined for the chop.

Nice finished fifth in the French top flight last season and could offer Kompany European football after they qualified for the Europa Conference League. But Burnley are said to still be the front-runners, despite them returning to the Championship next season.

The Clarets were relegated from the Premier League on the final day of the season. A 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle United on the final day of the season on Sunday saw Burnley finish in 18th place, ending a six-season stay in the top flight.

Caretaker Mike Jackson took over after the shock sacking of iconic boss Sean Dyche and despite returning 11 points from his eight games in charge, it was not enough to stave off relegation. Defender James Tarkowski is now set to depart for Everton, with his contract expiring.

He is set to be one of many high-profile players who leave Turf Moor during what is likely to be a summer of upheaval. England goalkeeper Nick Pope and winger Maxwell Cornet are two players almost certain to be sold as the club look to cash in amid financial uncertainties.

According to reports, 'a significant proportion' of a £65m loan taken out with American financiers MSD Holdings to complete ALK Capital's takeover in 2020 will have to be paid back this summer.

Jackson, speaking immediately after their relegation was confirmed on the final day, said: "It's raw, we've got a group of players who are gutted. There's a lot of emotion. The fans stuck with us. It's their club and we're gutted we couldn't give them what they wanted. I hope they saw a group fighting for them."
