One Premier League goal nominated for Puskas Award as FIFA reveal shortlist

Brighton star Julio Enciso's wonder goal against Manchester City is this year's only nomination from the Premier League.

But it has every chance of winning after a brilliant strike, flying off the Paraguayan's boot and into the top corner to leave Stefan Ortega with no hope.

However, it was not just the remarkable hit that wowed as the Seagulls played City off the pitch for a period with their incisive passing.

And as many teams will attest to, that is no easy task against a side that won the treble last season.

Ensico's strike has already won one award in the shape of the Premier League goal of the season for 2022/23.

But it will come up against some wonder goals from across the globe, ranging from the AFC U-20 Asian Cup to the Brazilian second division.

If Enciso's goal does win the Puskas Award, that would make it five wins out of seven for goals in the Premier League.

Erik Lamela and Heung-min Son both won it at Tottenham, while Mohamed Salah and Olivier Giroud have also lifted the award.

Salah's strike came against Everton after sitting down a couple of defenders before finding the top corner.

And Giroud's goal came after pulling out a spectacular scorpion kick goal against Crystal Palace.

In total, 11 players have been nominated for the Puskas Award this year.

They include wonder strikes from distance, brilliantly worked team goals and just outright moments of outrageous skill.

Three goals from the Women's World Cup this summer have been included, including Chelsea star Sam Kerr's blockbuster hit against England.

An overhead kick from outside the box, a juggled effort on the volley and a mazy run from the halfway line are also among the nominees.
