Kelleher admits he feels sorry for rivals coming up against Liverpool's attack

talksport.com, 22 September 2023, 11:22
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has admitted feeling sorry for rival defenders who have to face his club's attack.

The Reds have been lethal in front of goal this season - scoring 15 times in all competitions - including a 3-1 win over LASK on Thursday.

Defensively, Jurgen Klopp might have a few issues, but going forward, there are not many teams better.

Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were all on the score sheet in Austria as the Merseyside outfit once again produced a second half comeback.

But Liverpool have several more attacking options including Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ben Doak - an up-and-coming talent who started against LASK.

And Kelleher has joked that he is happy he only has to face Liverpool's frightening frontline in training.

"I think in the last few games we've scored a lot of goals," Kelleher told the club's website.

"That forward line is scary at times and there's a lot of depth to it as well.

"Whoever is starting, there are players to come off the bench that can cause problems. I'm happy that I only face them in training!"

While Liverpool look scary going forward, there are still problems to shore up at the back.

The Reds have conceded first in four games this campaign in all competitions, and have relied on their attack to get them out of trouble.

Against LASK, Kelleher was outdone by an absolute stunner from Florian Flecker - a half-volley that was drilled into the net.

Commenting on his performance, the Republic of Ireland international remarked: "It's my first competitive game since Southampton [last game of 2022/23 season].

"Same as outfielders, there's always that bit of rustiness. It was nice to get out there and hopefully I can play a few more games in this competition.

"We didn't play great first half but he [Klopp] said there were some good things that we were doing in the first half, that we should just keep them going.

"The key messages were just that we were playing some good football, it was just maybe some indecisiveness and just a bit of sloppiness in the first half.

"So we switched that out and luckily scored three great goals."
